[FFML] A thought on the future of the FFML

All,

I've been a member of and sometimes contributor to the FFML since 1998. I
was 14 years old. I don't write fanfiction anymore. I write about
philosophy, politics, and feminism now. Fanfiction played a crucial role in
the development of my writing, even if all of my writing now is non-fiction
and largely academic.

I still read nearly every message, or at least scan through it, which I
receive from the FFML. I at least begin to read each chapter of many long
running fanfiction series, although I may not read everything.

One of the advantaged to the ML format of the FFML is that these messages
and these stories COME TO ME. I'm too busy teaching my own students in my
English classes, working on my graduate thesis on Japanese ultranationalist
radicalism, and engaging in intersectional feminist thought to spare any
time looking for fanfiction. If not for the FFML, I would be entirely
disengaged in fanfiction entirely.

At least for me, the current FFML serves a very valuable purpose. It is is
not because I am a luddite or nostalgic for fanfiction days of yore that I
like the FFML as it is currently, but because the current format is exactly
what I need.

Raye, I am an American, but a multi-cultural one, I live and teach in Japan
and this is my sixth year here. I have spent time in South Korea, Taiwan,
France, and Australia. Oz is still my backup plan. I lived in Sydney near
Darling Harbour. My own English is a mix of Americanisms and
Commonwealthisms. When I went to graduate school, I had to consistently
inform American professors my spelling choices were not errors; they were
simply stylistic habits I had picked up which, as I teach my own students,
perfectly acceptable as long as they are used consistently.
