[FFML] A thought on the future of the FFML

I have been lurking in this list since 96 or 97, thereabouts, and this is
the topic that gets me to post? ;)

I have not read the entire thread, just skimmed it, so if anything I say
has come before no poaching was intended.

As a programmer, the C&C and collaborative writing issues inmediately bring
to mind version control systems, like CVS, SVN and particularly GIT. A
database driven forum is not neccesarily the _best_ answer, or even a
_right_ answer.

VCS Pros:
Easy collaboration between  multiple authors/betas/C&Crs.
Check out entire document (chapters, snips, drafts, scenes, whatever) and
commit only changes (deltas) saving on storage.
Easy diff/compare, merge from different sources.
Most VCSs have web front ends.

VCS Cons:
Most hosting accounts run on LAMP staks, may be difficult to
implement/install generally available VCS.

So maybe have forums like vBulletin for general reviews/discussion/goofing
off/pols/annaouncements and the like and a VCS system for in-depth
C&C/collaborative writing.
