Seriously though, it has been my understanding that
stories with an [original] tag are welcome here on the
list, as long as they have a strong anime flavor. And
isn't that what we're all here for? The anime flavoring?
Thus quote the FAQ: http://ffml.anifics.com/faq.txt
* WHAT IS THE FANFIC MAILING LIST?
The fanfic mailing list (FFML, or ML for short) is a forum for authors
and fans to discuss fanfics (fanfiction stories) with an anime/manga
theme that are posted to the FFML. Generally, this means stories
involving settings, characters, props, attacks or any combination of
the above from anime/manga.
And just in case you don't know what anime or manga is, anime refers
to Japanese animation (cartoons) and manga refers to Japanese graphic
novels (comic books).
The word "original" does not appear anyplace in the FAQ.
Nor has it at any point been labeled a 'no-no' when it has been
posted. I was under the impression that original fiction _was_
allowed, or else I wouldn't have posted mine here, back in the day.
It's just the anime/manga flavoring (Sunrise over Sakajima and
assorted variants of the same, for example), but original fictions of
vastly different genres have appeared. The aformentioned sci-fi thing
with an immortal that I found oddly remenicent of Zelazny's works
springs to mind.
I differ somewhat from your viewpoint. I'm much more likely to look
for fiction for something I'm familiar with (having already invested
that time, etc.).
I don't think it'd be wrong to start encouraging more original works,
neccessarily, though I do think it would be odd to have an awful lot
of original fiction on the ... uh ... well ... _fanfiction_ mailing
list....

P.S. The word "watermelon" does not appear anyplace in the FAQ either.
What!? SACRELIGE! The FFML's defining documents MUST refer to some
aspect of Mutsumi, or all is LOST!
