I haven't actually found it to be hostile as you have (with
one or two specific exceptions), just ... apathetic. Like I
said elsewhere, the list is little more than a distribution
channel as far as I'm concerned.

Which is definitely sad, b/c one of the things that attracted me to the
FFML in the first place (IIRC, I stumbled into it via one of the
archives whilst Googling for this new phenomenon 'fanfiction', which I'd
also stumbled across by way of Eyrie and Chris Davies, but I digress)
was the commentary exchanges -- the multi-party conversations between
author and C&Cers that could spring up when some really good exchanges
got going. One of my favorite archived pieces is actually Don
Granberry's (wish he'd write more) C&C of Susan Doenime's (*really* wish
she'd write again) "PastPresent: Tourism." The commentary was nearly as
fun to read as the story itself.
That interaction, which is much rarer but still happens these days, was
*the* main thing that drew me to the FFML. I wish I knew how to bring
it back (aside from C&Cing more myself, which I *want* to do, but am
restricted by RL time pressures...)
