Somehow, it doesn't fit the rest of the story (in my opinion).
Now, if Mars were to somehow make it into a joke that's supposed to

Ah.  It wasn't obvious that that was, in fact, a (possibly bombing)
joke.  I had more after that, but snipped it since it was getting a
little long for a spamfic (and the muse was starting to take it away
from the main point - how Mars tried to make a joke, only to have it
backfire when Serenity turned pupilless, hollow eyes on Mars, the look
that silently screamed "you hurt me" and pained Mars more than any fire
ever could); I guess I should've replaced that ending with something
else to clarify it.

In a dark humor kind of way, yes.

...I wonder if that should be the theme of my next Azumanga darkfic.
