To get to the FFML, I imagine that a new author would have to stumble
across a possibly cryptic reference in the author's notes of something
he'd read (which isn't likely), decide to Google it, and be determined
enough to dig through the FAQ, fire up his e-mail, and subscribe. If
there's an easier way, I don't know what it is.
That's how I found the FFML. I kept seeing it referenced and googled it.
Me too. It's also worth noting that this is less likely to happen
nowadays then a few years back - the vast majority of references to the
FFML out there are probably buried in the author's notes of
long-finished or abandoned Ranma fics, which aren't precisely where I
imagine today's budding fanfic reader or author gets his or her start.
But you have given me an idea. Keenspace and Keenspot use a pretty
decent Message board software and I've seen it used elsewhere. Can't
remember the name offhand, though.
Why not reincarnate the FFML as a web forum? conceptart.org is a
giant message board with sections and subsections. The ML can be used
for news or updates or the like by the admins.
I would much rather see something more like Yahoo! Groups, with an
additional web-based interface to the existing mailing list, though I
suspect doing that would prove more difficult. I don't think that a
message board format is as well-suited to the sort of discussion we want
to see here as e-mail. (Imagine how ugly a thread with a fairly long
chapter and more than one detailed C&C would get, and then throw in the
responses to C&C...)
