Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, Michael. Work continues to be
nuts. Also, I'd like to take a quick moment to let people know that my
web site is currently down because my data transfer for the month has
been exceeded (and it's only half-way through the month!). Popularity
is a double edged sword. I'm working on rectifying that. Anyway, on
with the comments!

"That witch crippled White Destiny{ :}," the man growled back. "She
cannot protect you. We have not even been able to restore basic control
functions. And none of the others have returned. For all we know, they
are dead and only we remain."

So at last we know the real name of Desidinder. Now I wonder who "That
witch" was. Hopefully she's not still around thousands of years later,
but Dragon, Hild, and the godlings are.

Well, we do know someone with the sobriquet "Ship-Killer", don't we?

"Busted," the older man grinned ruefully. "As the younger folk
say. No, to be honest, there were many sleepless nights. Especially
after I became Her Grace's guard captain. It was a lot of
responsibility. Been reading reports?"

They've been referring to the Queen as Her Majesty and I'd expect a
princess to be referred to as Her Highness, so this is either a typo or
a reference to someone else, possibly the head of an exiled household.

I haven't established a lot of rules regarding the royal houses in
the story, since although such things are of acedemic interest they tend
to take away from the story at hand. For reference, though, in the UK,
a duke or duchess is referred to as His Grace or Her Grace, so we can
assume the person Greely served was a duchess, not a princess. Royal
Guards in this kingdom serve all members of the royal family, not just
the queen. It isn't specified in this conversation that Greely served
Gar's mother ... since your line of reasoning is pretty clearly that if
Gar is Kendra's cousin, then one of his parents must have been a sibling
to the queen's mother. That line of reasoning is quite correct, as far
as it goes. Of course, although Gar is referred to as Kendra's cousin,
it has not been stated whether he is a direct cousin or a more distant
one. The fact that he is clearly not Her cousin at all aside, of course
... Anyway, to answer your question (eventually), Greely served the
head of the duchy in the outland province of Haaken. Whether the head
of that duchy was Gar's mother hasn't been made clear yet. But it will be.

"Yes. Supposedly, she actually spoke to some of the principals
involved in that time, which is completely feasible considering she was
their contemporary. Where some of the incredible coincidences and more
outrageous turns of events are now dismissed as literary devices to add
suspense to the tale, her writings clearly state that there was an external
force at work. The formation of the Crimson Tria, Horaven's being
forced to divert to Terrin Saeche by an unseasonable storm, Garven
d'Or's discovery of the Lance of Elements ... if even half of what she was
told is true, we are talking about an incredibly unlikely series of events
coming together to give a small band of champions a fighting chance.

Now I wonder what Horaven did at Terrin Saeche and whether it had any
connection to the fight Yusaku was in there.

Ah, you remembered. Yes, that is an interesting question, isn't
it? That place seems to have a bad history. And bad history, like a
bad penny, just keeps coming back ...

"And the safe?" Yurina asked, cupping her hands around the
second boot and sliding it on.
"Vanka knows better than to keep anything incriminating,"
Saekianna said with certainty. "And she only knew as much as she
needed to. Even under the most rigorous interrogation, she could not
reveal what she does not know. Still, I want the perimeter secured as a
precaution."

If they knew how secure the safe was, they might not be so sure she
wasn't keeping anything incriminating there.

Yeah. I try to have people react according to their own knowledge
and prejudices, of course, but we all know better. I just didn't see
any reason why Saekianna would guess just how kick-ass this particular
safe was. It was a real piece of work, experimental Gel notwithstanding.

Meredith's skills had warned them of the enemy's approach.
Now Jacyinthe showed them all what Meredith saw. An image appeared
in the air, ghostly but clear, from a viewpoint close to the ground. Sarah
gasped and Kisa grabbed Bella's hand as the image showed them five of
the hated sailor girls, including the princess herself and the traitor. Also
present was Tuxedo Mask and a rangy, dark-haired boy with dangerous
eyes. Saekianna recognised him at once; he had stolen V from her at the
moment of her victory, then interfered again when she'd had the wolf at
her mercy. Yes, she owed that one a long, exquisite punishment.

Maybe she'll let that cute red-head she met at Club Kiss watch. :}b

Boy, wouldn't that be a real Kuno moment!

We moved out cautiously, looking for any sign of ambush.
Fortunately, we had a clear view of each of the tunnels, and Mercury was
still scanning. Even if they'd been expecting trouble, it would be next to
impossible for them to sneak up on us.

Sounds like famous last words.

Don't it just? Like I said earlier, everybody operates on their own
limited perspective while the audience screams, "Listen to the spooky
music! The monster's coming, damn it!"

"Super," she gasped. "Come for the strangulation, stay for the
drowning. Where are we?"

And she was complaining earlier that he never took her anywhere!

Be careful what you wish for, Minako.

"Lest we forget," Mars murmured with a slow, sidelong glance,
"Travos, Dasma, and Alieva were once considered to be one of the most
celebrated trias ever. That one did not end well."

As I said earlier, a merely 100 year tiff is hardly an end for
goddesses. I agree that their followers may take a shorter view.

Yeah, the mortal world considers the story ended, but the history of
gods and goddesses is long and convoluted. There is definitely more to
be written here.

"Am I the only one here who's ever seen a movie?" Jupiter
asked, aggrieved. "Come on. 'Journey to Vassalasta?' 'Captains of
Underearth?' All eight of the Quentin Marsh movies, for heaven's sake!
When you go out onto a rickety old rope bridge, it breaks! Always! And
usually you have to dangle from it while fighting some six-armed lizard
man with a pocketknife!"
"He only had four arms," Mercury pointed out. She looked up,
saw Jupiter's expression, and flushed. "I liked those movies," she said
defensively.

Unexpected depths to our Ami. But where did the lizard man get a pocket
knife? You said he didn't have pockets.

Dude, like, the lizardman didn't have the knife. Quentin had the
knife. He fought the lizardman with it, then killed the evil vizier
with the corkscrew. "Guess that screws up your plan, Vizier!" Ha!
Man, I LOVE that guy! Er, I mean, yeah. Cause everyone knows that
lizardmen don't wear pants.

Thanks for the comments. I'm in the middle of a job that's
imploding, so i don't know if I'll have chapter 19 out before next
weekend at the absolute earliest. Plus, I have to fix this thing with
my web page. But progress is being made. So stay tuned.

Mark
