I find the dystopian CT a highly plausible concept. So many things could go
wrong. So many things kept in the dark. The creator of the series must
have had similar thoughts due to the number of cryptic lines and the
situations the senshi find themselves in.
Think about it this way.
The average young teenage girl is brought up to think of herself as a
princess and that the world naturally revolves around her (my nieces easily
bear this out). Now you take a group of girls, all of whom are social
outcasts (ami's a bookworm, usagi's a clutz, etc.) and have few friends,
give them superpowers and convince them that they actually ARE the center of
the universe. The controlling forces behind this are a manipulative older
woman who states she knows the future, but can't reveal much of it in order
to protect it, and a pair of talking cats who only help when it seems their
plans might fail.
The villains that come out of the woodwork are practicing a form of total
war -- not much different from the atomic bombs dropped on japan and the
firebombing of several german cities in WW2. Fight both the military forces
and its civilian support. All of these beings have a political agenda that
oppose CT. What the villains are doing is still wrong, but we don't know if
they are fighting a war of conquest or attempting a preemptive strike. The
senshi don't actually know what's true, either -- merely what they've been
told by their advisors.
Let's also take a look at the outer senshi. These individuals apparently
remember more than the inners do about their past. In the beginning, they
obviously have no regard for the civilians, but tone down their actions to
keep Usagi and co. from realizing bad guys can have senshi powers, too.
First, the outers attempt to kill Sailor Saturn (a child!) because she was
too powerful. When this approach did not succeed, they instead adopt her.
All three outer senshi in the same house. The only real friend Saturn has
is the older Usagi's daughter (who in order to go on living must maintain
the illusion). An effective method of controlling Saturn's environment by
controlling the information she is given. Parenting is the most effective
form of brainwashing.
Now, this doesn't predicate on the concept that Pluto is evil. She may
actually be under that geas to insure CT's creation. Usagi, by the time she
has become Queen, may have realized what actually happened -- the future
manipulating the past. She may indeed think she was doing what she could to
protect the people from themselves, but she's not going to give up the power
she wields. She's fought for it, died for it, hell, she deserves it, right?
So, she keeps the only ones who could ruin this for her under her thumb, and
the older group put on a little act when the senshi from the past arrive.
Just some thoughts.
