I didn't find it all that jarring, outside of those practical aspects. I
like the kind of cultural oddities that appear in good science fiction
settings. If most of the things I pointed out were conscious decisions
on your part, I don't have any issues with them at all.
I wouldn't want to be there when someone tried to yank all those
piercings Arika has, tough - especially if the someone is good enough to
pull it off, as it were :).
