Now Elektra understood: Magnanimity. A useless gesture
fools engaged in.
To
give something without the expectation of receiving
something in return
was
a waste of effort. Obviously this girl believed herself
some sort of
Samaritan whose duty it was to protect others.
Is samaritan a proper noun?
Not sure. Word seemed to think so. I ought to look it up though.
"Samaritan" was originally the term applied to a person from a
small sub-tribe of Israelites, and they were looked down on by Judeans
and other Israelites, sort of like the Japanese feel about Burakumin.
However, nowadays because of the parable about the "good" Samaritan,
it's become an adjective. Saying someone is a "good samaritan" is a
description, and not a proper noun as it once was. It's saying you're a
helpful person, not a member of that tribe. BTW, that parable was
saying effectively that "even a Samaritan" could be helpful, and it's
actually very insulting to the tribe!
