[SNIP Commentary]
Well, I'll take your advice into consideration, but I dunno. I don't
think much of my writing ability at times, but when it clicks for me, as it
did in this story, it just feels right, even if it may seem purple to some.
I'm a reflection of my major influences I guess- Lovecraft, Moorcock, Jack
Vance... Even Robert E. Howard, my favorite writer of fantasy, could get
verbose, despite his renown as a slam-bang writer of quick action. His
barbarians never talked liked barbarians probably did.
[Belit] "Conan, do you fear the gods?"
"I would not tread on their shadow," answered the barbarian
conservatively. "Some gods are strong to harm, other, to aid; at least so say
their priests..."
[Conan speaking of the Cimmerian gods] "Their chief is Crom. He dwells
on a great mountain. What use to call on him? Better to be silent than to
call his attention to you; he will send you dooms, not fortunes! He is grim
and loveless, but at birth he breathes power to strive and slay into a man's
soul. What else shall men ask of the gods?"
(Excerpted from Queen of the Black Coast by Robert E. Howard)
But as I said, I'll take it into consideration when I go over the
story again. I have a few things I need to correct (such as Lime's hair. I
thought it was colored like tiger fur, but I guess he too wears a cap).
Thanks for your time and tolerance,
Jeremy Harper
