There is a huge difference between writing what you want for yourself and
what Chris has done. He mentions alienation of people, I don't thinks it
from disregarding or disagreeing with given C&C or for telling people he
doesn't want pre-readers. Like Peter said in an e-mail yesterday, Chris
should have said it more prominently. Also, why post a story to a forum,
the FFML, that you don't want criticisms or comments on. Wouldn't a link to
his URL been more than adequate? A direct post to RAAC, perhaps? There is
also another matter of etiquette involved. If someone takes the time to
write something to you, expressing their feelings, is it not only polite to
return the e-mail, even if it's only to say "Thanks for you effort, but I'm
not taking C&C into account."

He says in the notes that he hopes people enjoyed his writing, his actions
speak differently. There are a lot of people I don't agree with, but I try
to give them the consideration of returning their inquiries and especially
their interest.

"I'd also like to apologize to everyone, friends and new readers alike, who
asked to preread or edit. For reasons I'll explain in a bit, I told them
'no'." This is a direct quote from his notes. I saw no evidence that he
actually said 'no' to anyone, only ignoring.

He ends the notes with, "Thank you all for reading. Please send e-mail... or
fanart *hint* *hint* if you like my story." But why, just to stroke his
ego? Getting negative feedback is a part of life.
I don't care if people don't use my comments, or disagree with them. But
the rudeness that has been displayed by Mr. Jones is a different story, and
is one of the reasons I and other people I know don't do more C&C. IF the
author is too busy to acknowledge it, what's the point. It's a waste of my
time. Which I have precious little of. And MR. Jones is not the sole case
of authors pleading for comments but ignoring the people who they want
comments from.

Author's Notes

The simple fact is that authors are choose their
stories, and by the
same token they choose whether to accept or ignore C&C.
Whenever I write a
piece of C&C I always point out that it's my opinion to be
ignored or used
		as desired.
In response to your comment that your going to write to
please yourself
rather than try to please critics, Good For You!

I've never really sought pre-readers for my own work
(Partially because
I'm never quite sure of my writing schedule) but it's all a
matter of
prefference. In overall terms, the C&C from opposing
mindsets has a role
that's like the Ragbash from Werewolf the Appocalypse. By
challenging and
ridiculing everything, they reafirmed what was true and
right and weeded out
		what was weak and false.
As far as your choice on the Clan, that's your choice,
hold to it with
no regrets. Provided that it works for you. The Clan and
newRanma are
quite different in tone, desired realism(Excepting the
realism that snuck
in), and intended impact. Do what works, and change if your
not satisfied.
And of course go by your own scale of satisfaction.
Though I do understand your decision to consider each
chapter done once
you've finished it. EVERY time I re-read one of my stories
I see ways I
want to change it. Still I want to finish one of the
stories someday, so I
call most of the modification quits once I can read through
the story
without wincing at how bad my own writing is.
Anyways, may your writing always bring you joy. If the
joy is sharable,
		that's just an incidental bonus.
