Incidentally, I thought I heard that print club machines had finally

True. Just saw four of them last night in Edgewater, NJ.
Of course, I was at the Mitsuwa Asian shopping center... but they
*were* in
the US.
Seriously, I have seen them elsewhere, in less culturally-specific
surroundings; most notably the Jersey Shore.
They have been in the Lower Mainland (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
surrounding communities) for years. The machines are even on the larger
ferries over to Vancouver Island. And they are not only in the Asian
Malls.
The point is not whether they exist in the States; the discussion is
about what to call them. Do they actually have signs on them calling
them "print clubs"? Or do they have signs saying something more
descriptive and appropriate like "photo sticker booth"?
Closer to the second, although at the moment I cannot remember the execate
name (mostly because there are different distributers of these things and
each one has a different name for them). By the way, they are not really
a booth, more like a frige sized box with an awning from which hangs a back
drop. You get between the box and the back drop for the photos to be taken
and you can choose from a selection of background and effects. It is very
clear what the machines are for, no matter what the name is, because of the
instructions and exsamples all over the sides and the outside of the back
drop.
I'd still advise against using the term "print clubs" in a fanfic unless
the term is, in fact, actually being used in an English-speaking
environment like the Jersey Shore. The concept of a booth where you get
your picture taken and it comes out on a souvenir sticker is a simple
one, and I see no reason why it shouldn't catch on in the
States--someone's bound to see it as a money-maker--but I sincerely
doubt they'd call them "print club" machines.
I have to agree here. "Print clubs" make me think of the 1950's and a
book-of-the-month type thing where you got art prints and repros instead.
<snippage of more good stuff that I agree with>
