Subject: [FFML] [Fanfic][Robotech] In Their Own Words: An Interview with
VADM Richard A. Hunter, REF(ret)
An interview with VADM Richard A. Hunter, REF (ret);
December 10, 2065.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Excellent interview piece. Very personal. Always hoped someone
would 'out-McKinney' the books and
actually write full versions of the diary and interview sections found
at the start of every chapter. Got a
better look at Rick Hunter and his relationship to Lisa and it filled in
the gaps about Minmei. Very tragic story.
I'm not sure Rick would have been so frank about certain things
(his relationship with Minmei and her
eventual downfall comes to mind) in an interview setting. He might have
been this honest with a close friend
but explicitly stating it to a total stranger who's going to print it
for public consumption I think a bit of a
stretch. People being interviewed tend to be far more guarded in their
answers; knowing full well that their
words could have a negative effect on how people view them.
Perhaps if this weren't an interview but rather a short story where
we're allowed to eavesdrop on Rick talking
with another aging veteran, say, in some bar or veteran's club. I would
think there would be quite a few
VFW-like clubs or organizations around after so much fighting. There I
could see Rick opening up
and saying what's really on his mind - especially after a few drinks.
^_^
All-in-all, a very nice bit of writing. You obviously have a good
feel for the Rick Hunter character.

Author's notes:
The inspiration for this really hit me out of the blue, and I was
compelled to run with it. In the process I found myself reexamining
the world of Robotech as told to us by the Jacks McKinney, and how
I felt about the decisions they had made in bringing the saga to a
close. I also found myself refuting with Rick Hunter's voice a
certain fanfic written by Richard Lawson, where after a long and
rocky marriage, Rick and Lisa get a divorce. I could never agree
with Mr. Lawson's conclusions regarding the two, and while I
discussed the matter with him at the time, I only feel right now
that I have done anything positive to bring forward my feelings
on the matter.
On this, we agree. I understand where Richard is coming from
but disagree with his conclusions. (Damn fine writing, though.)

(Who's still trying to imagine Jamie Wilde with a Rick Hunter
voice.)
