Part 13 "Friendships"
Little Raye Hino was finding it increasingly difficult to sulk
as she rode atop Chad's shoulders towards the park. She had been put
into a pair of red corduroy pants and a red T-shirt. It wasn't her first
choice of attire; Raye had wanted to be gloomier and dress all in black.
Chad, however, wasn't about to let her do it. She was embarrassed to
some extent by her behavior.
She had always enjoyed riding on Chad's shoulders and it helped
to lift her spirits. The fact that the acolyte was going to be her
father, in her mind was her father, wouldn't let her be totally angry
with Lita or Serena.
"Looks like we're the last ones here, Pumpkin," Chad observed.
Raye, drawing out of her own thoughts, looked around and
realized that they were already in the park and nearly to where the
party was being held. She felt her mouth swing open when she caught
sight of Mina. The little blonde was decked out in a bright orange and
very frilly party dress while an equally bright orange bow held her long
hair in place. If truth be known, it had taken a large number of tears
for Mina to be allowed to wear the dress; her parents had thought it
overly frilly for an outdoor party.
Carrie, on the other hand, seemed almost plain beside her
friend. The little girl was wearing a blue skirt and lavender blouse.
Talking to Mina and Carrie was Serena. The little girl's
pigtails sported pink bows that matched the pink sugar colored dress.
Raye sometimes envied how cute Serena looked. She supposed it had
something to do with her friend being the Moon Princess.
<Amy looks nice,> Raye thought as she saw the blue haired girl
standing beside the imposter and another little girl Raye didn't
recognize. Amy was wearing a simple blue sundress with a white collar.
The little girl that Raye didn't know was wearing a russet colored
dress.
The priestess was just thinking that she should have worn a
dress too when she saw that Lita wasn't wearing one. Instead, the
"meanie" was wearing a pair of green overalls, and a green T-shirt that
was a couple of shades darker than the overalls. Mary Anderson had
wanted her daughter to wear a dress but since the party was at the park
and her little tomboy wasn't easy on her clothing, she had finally
relented and allowed Lita go with the overalls and T-shirt.
It was Reenie who first spotted Raye and called a greeting to
her and Chad. The eight year old was wearing a blue sailor suit with
white and blue checkered bows on the meatballs in her hair.
As her friends and family sang "Happy Birthday", Amy felt tears
in her eyes. While the Lunar Kittens thought that it was due to rather
off-key singing, they were hearing, the simple fact was that Amy was
very happy. <This is so different,> Amy thought, <And everybody's
here...> Everyone except for one person -- her father. Nevertheless, it
didn't bother her. Despite the fact that she wished her father was here,
Amy was secure in that he loved her very much.
"Okay, birthday girl," Mrs. Anderson announced, "What do you
want first, presents or cake?"
"CAKE!" Serena and Reenie declared then giggled when Ellen shot
them a stern look.
"PRESENTS!" Mina, Kimmy, and Lita shouted together.
Amy considered this for several seconds and then decided,
"Presents please." While Mina and Lita cheered, Serena and Reenie pouted
slightly before grinning at her. <I knew Serena would want cake.> Well,
it was her birthday and her friend would just have to wait. Grinning
from ear to ear, the blue haired child took the first present which
turned out to be from Carrie.
Ripping off the paper, and completely ignoring the card, she
looked at the storybook that was revealed. "Thanks!" she chirped
brightly and was about to proceed to her next present when her mother
stopped her.
"Don't forget the card, Amy," her mother reminded her.
"Sorry." <Aw man!> Amy whined internally but managed to contain
her annoyance as her mother read the card to her. <Well, it is kinda
cute,> Amy admitted as she looked at the picture of the two kittens on
the front of the card. Handing it back to her mother, Amy tore into the
next gift.
"I hope ya like it," Mina commented.
"What is it?!" Serena demanded. All she could see was a boring
looking box.
"A kitty!" Amy squealed in delight. At once, the Lunar Cats
prepared to run; normal cats didn't like them. Fortunately, it only
turned out to be a stuffed toy. Amy hugged the powder blue cat to her
chest and giggled. "Thank you!" she squealed.
"Told ya!" Mina said to her mother.
Amy giggled then and impatiently waited for the card to be read
to her. Raye's gift was a doll and a few Shinto good luck charms. Reenie
and Serena had decided to combine their money and get Amy a picture
book. They also created a handmade card for Amy.
"Mine now!" Lita finally burst out, "Open mine!"
"Sure Sis," Amy replied and taking the gift, ripped off the
gift-wrapping. It turned out to be two gifts. The first was a storybook.
The other was a container of blue bubblebath liquid. Leaning over, she
gave her sister a large hug and said, "Thanks Lita."
Next was a large flat package. Amy at first wasn't sure what it
was or who it was from, and then with a start, she thought about her
father. Sure enough, it contained a picture he had painted. Next were
the typical presents from her mother, mostly "boring" clothes although
there was another stuffed animal.
"Now I have one more present," Mrs. Anderson declared and lifted
a fair-sized box from under the table.
"What is it, Mommy?" Amy asked in anticipation.
"Open it up and see," her mother replied and then grinned. Amy
turned to Lita for a clue but the ponytailed girl was looking just as
puzzled as Amy was feeling. Shrugging, Amy knelt on her chair and opened
the box. Blinking, she pulled out the safari hat that she found inside.
Puzzled, she pulled it out and looked at it curiously.
"That's for when you go ghost hunting, dear," her mother told
her with a straight face. Lita burst out laughing and promptly fell out
of her chair. The others join in giggling as Amy, grinning the entire
time, plunked the safari hat onto her head and looked around the table.
The presents done and the candles blown out, everyone tore into
the cake. Much to Reenie's, and even Ellen's, surprise, it was not
Serena who made the biggest mess with the birthday cake. Rather it was
Amy who joyfully devoured her cake and the other treats that had been
provided and wound up looking as Serena typically looked after gorging.
<Guess I goofed,> Serena thought as she heard the giggling
behind her. Lifting the blindfold, she noticed her error. "Oh, I'm
sorry!" she exclaimed to the picture of the donkey when she realized
that she'd stuck its tail to its nose. This apology brought even more
giggling from the group of girls behind her.
Turning, she tossed the blindfold to Reenie and then noticed
that Raye wasn't with the others. <I wonder if she and Lita had a
fight?> Lita had been looking sadly at Raye ever since she arrived.
Serena decided, <She should be playing with us.> Spotting the raven
haired girl sitting alone leaning against a tree with her back to the
other girls, Serena skipped over to her friend.
"Hi," Serena chirped, "Come 'n' play, Raye."
"No."
"Why?" Serena asked as she sat down beside her friend. <What did
I do?> she wondered when Raye gave her a stern look. "Why are ya sad?"
"Lita's a meanie!" Raye replied. She sniffled then and looked
away from her princess. "She fibbed."
"Why did she fib?" Serena asked. <I can't see Lita lying.>
"Lita's not Lita. She really old 'n' stupid."
Serena sat stunned for a long moment. Raye had somehow learned
that they weren't her real friends. "Raye," the blonde began, "Lita
didn't fib. I told her not to tell you we weren't your real friends."
"Why?" Raye asked, a hurt look on her features.
"Well, 'cause we aren't gonna stay long."
"Serena! Raye!" Mina called out, "Come play Sailor Scouts!"
Serena and Raye turned to regard Mina who was standing with the others
girls.
"You play, Mina!" Serena called out to her friend. Mina shrugged
and turned back to the group of girls to discuss how things would
proceed. "Can you keep a secret?"
"What?" Raye asked.
"You're my bestest friend, Raye," Serena explained, "I didn't
wanna make you sad. Lita isn't a meanie."
"You're not my bestest friend!" Raye stated harshly, "Lita is...
well sorta." She crossed her arms and glared at Serena. "You hang 'round
Reenie all the time."
"She's my daughter."
"So?" Raye asked. <I was here first.> They had been best
friends. She had missed Serena when the pink haired Scout had come back
from the future and taken over everything. That's why she had latched
onto Lita. "You like her more than me."
"I love Reenie," Serena tried to explain, "And I care about
you."
"Then why'd ya make the good Serena go 'way?"
"I thought something was wrong," Serena admitted, "I thought
Reenie was in trouble." Raye seemed to relax a little but the scowl
didn't leave her face. "I guess when Lita went away, Reenie got majorly
upset and I felt that."
"Lita d-died," Raye corrected sadly. That had been the worst day
of her young life. Her violet eyes misted over and she blinked rapidly.
"That hurt, huh?"
Raye stared at Serena for a long moment. "Ya get it?"
"That Lita died?"
"Yeah," the six year old priestess answered. When Serena
solemnly nodded, she gave this new revelation some thought, <Serena
didn't get it before.> She had tried to explain it to her friend but
little Serena had always thought that Lita would eventually come back
from wherever she was hiding.
"You thought that Lita was your Lita, right?"
"I thought she came back." She sniffled and then, "I prayed to
Kami like Grandpa told me. I wanted Lita to come back so much and she
did... but now..." She felt Serena moving closer. <I don't wanna cry or
Chad will take me home.> And she didn't want that.
"So, why are ya mad at Lita? I mean she was nice to you."
"She pretended to be the real Lita!" Raye hissed while looking
at her princess. Her Lita would never fib to her.
"Really?"
"I..." Raye squirmed for a minute. There wasn't any way that she
could say what she wanted to and it was starting to frustrate her. After
a few moments thought, she decided, "She didn't tell me 'fore that she's
the old Lita."
"Would you be mad at her if she did?"
"Yes," the raven haired girl answered firmly. She turned to
regard Serena fully and saw that her princess had unshed tears in her
eyes. "Why you cryin'?"
Serena blinked for a moment and grinned. "I'm just sad that
you're mad at us, Raye. We're your friends. Lita was worried that you'd
be mad at her." The child gave her a confused look. "Lita worried that
you wouldn't like us if we told ya."
"So, you didn't tell me."
"Lita wanted to," Serena admitted. "Be mad at me, Raye. I told
her not to tell you."
The priestess gave this some thought. Something told her Serena
was sincere. That this girl was still the Moon Princess she'd sworn to
follow and protect. Raye began to glean what Serena tried to tell her,
at least in part. One worry was still paramount though. <If Lita leaves,
will mine come back?> "But Lita died. She went away like Mommy... like
Daddy."
"But Chad's your daddy now. You told me," Serena pointed out.
"Yeah." Raye felt happiness at that. She gave Serena a hug then
despite her mood. "Serena, you got me a daddy."
"Lita did that," Serena corrected while returning the hug, "I
just helped."
It was just like her Serena to be modest. Raye knew in her heart
they both played a major role. "What's gonna happen when you go 'way?"
"I don't know, Raye," Serena answered, "I think your Lita will
come back."
"You promise?"
"No," the blonde truthfully answered while shaking her head,
"'Cause I don't know what'll happen."
Raye wanted to be mad. She felt she had a right to be upset for
being deceived like she had been. On the other hand, Serena and Lita had
helped her make a hard decision. This Serena seemed to understand her
too.
Little Lita Anderson noticed that Serena and Raye were talking.
Abandoning the game of pretend Chibi-Scouts, she walked over to where
her friends were sitting.
"Hi," she chirped.
"Hi Lita!" Serena declared with a grin.
"Hi," Raye responded. She stretched out her senses. "Are you a
ghost?"
"No," Lita responded and sat down. She looked between her
friends before saying, "Raye, I'm really really sorry. I didn't mean to
fib to you. I did wanna tell you. Honest."
"Why didn't ya tell me?"
"'Cause," Serena interjected, "We're gonna leave soon. Go back
home."
"That's what I meant yesterday," Lita chimed in.
"Oh..."
<She seems in better spirits today,> Lita observed, <That's
good.>
"Why'd you show off when we were skatin'?"
"I wasn't trying to," Lita protested and blushed under the stern
look she was getting from Serena, "I was upset."
"Why?" the raven haired child asked.
"Because you were mad at me and I was tired," Lita replied, "You
kicked me out of bed." Raye blushed at this. "And you put an anti-evil
ward on me." Lita then produced the ward from her dimensional pocket.
The priestess blushed again. "Did you make it?"
"Grandpa helped."
"It's pretty good."
"So, is Lita a meanie?" Serena asked her friend.
"S'ppose not," Raye replied, "You promise my Lita will come
back?"
"Raye, I wish I could. I really do," Lita began, "But I don't
know what will happen."
"We can maybe ask Amy later on," Serena suggested. Raye seemed
to like that idea.
"Am I your bestest friend?" Raye asked Lita.
"Yep!"
"I meant the other me?"
"Uh..."
"I'm not 'cause I'm mean, huh?" Raye concluded. How could she be
like that? Yet, she had seen it.
"You remember?"
"It like a dream. Like those... um... spirits I see in the fire
sometimes," Raye explained. <I was really naughty to Chad.>
"You ARE my friend," Lita assured Raye, "The other you's just
mean to Serena 'n' stuff."
"WHAT?!"
"Way to put your foot in it, Lita," Serena muttered out.
The minions of the Dead Moon Circus looked on with interest as
HawksEye and TigersEye battled each other. The third member of the
Amazon Trio yawned and gave the two boys a bored look.
"And I said your cage was stupid!" TigersEye snarled, "I
shouldn't have listened to you!" He swung his whip but HawksEye burnt it
to a crisp. Snarling in outrage, the first youth lunged at the red
haired boy and made to strike him. HawksEye jumped out of the way.
HawksEye was brought up short when he heard the thunderous voice
of Zirconia shouting, "ENOUGH!"
"Grandma Zirconia, have you found us a new target?" FishEye
questioned.
"Yes," Zirconia answered then commanded, "HawksEye, TigersEye,
pick yourselves up!" Both boys sprung to attention and bowed. "Here is
your new target." She threw a photograph down to the children and
FishEye sprang forward to catch it.
"Oh... it's a girl," FishEye pouted and flipped it
disappointedly over her shoulder. HawksEye would have grabbed it but
TigersEye drove a fist into his ribs.
"It's mine!" TigersEye snarled, "I'll do it, Grandma Zirconia."
<I will do it my way this time.> Glancing down to the photo, he was
pleased to see that it was not some old teen like the last time. <And
what pretty brown hair...>
Reenie, who had been watching Lita, Serena, and Raye play on the
swings, turned around when she heard a commotion around where the others
were.
"I WON! I WON! I WON!!!!" Mina was shouting while jumping up and
down.
"What happened?" Serena asked. She had stopped swinging and was
looking curiously to where her blonde friend was bouncing up and down
excitedly.
"I don't know," Reenie shrugged.
"Mina Aino! Get over here!" Mrs. Aino shouted. The bouncy blonde
stopped her celebration and skipped happily over to where her mother was
sitting with the other grownups.
<I wonder what's up?> Reenie thought. Sliding a little closer,
she cocked her head and listened.
"Mina, you should have let Amy win. It's her birthday."
"Aw Mommy..."
"Mina," Mrs. Aino said sternly. Mina quickly sobered and looked
towards the ground. "I think maybe you girls should play something
quieter now."
"But I LIKE Sailor Scouts." <Sailor Venus had 'em on the run!>
"I know but you've had enough for today. It's Amy's party. Let
someone else choose the next game," her mother suggested.
"Reenie." The eight year old jumped, and then flushed brightly
at having been caught eavesdropping. "Why don't you get the girls to
play a quieter game?" her aunt suggested.
"Okay, Aunt Ellen." Turning to Raye, Serena, and Lita, she waved
them to follow her before trotting over to the others. Once everyone was
together in a group, she thought for a moment before saying, "We're
gonna play Hide 'N' Seek. Mina, you're `itī. You go over to that tree
and count to twenty."
"Are you gonna play too, Big Sister?" Serena asked hopefully.
"I'll be judge." Besides, it was a game for little kids.
"Is that okay, Amy?"
"Yep!" Amy cheered in anticipation. Mina sighed, walked over to
the tree, and started counting. It was boring game but better than
nothing. "Come on, Kimmy!" With that, both Amy and her friend bounded
away to find hiding spots.
"Come on, Lita," Raye called and those two girls also left.
"Guess that leaves us," Serena said to Carrie. Carrie nodded and
they too left.
<I'm glad Raye and Lita are talking.> But what would happen
after Lita left? She just didn't know.
"TWENTY!" Mina declared, "Ready or not, here I come!"
"Oh..." Kimmy breathed out, "Mina got Serena." She and Amy were
hiding in some bushes.
"Poor Serena..." Amy said softly and assured Kimmy, "But Mina
won't catch us."
"Right," Kimmy replied. "I wish I was as smart as you."
"You are," Amy whispered out. Kimmy shook her head. "Why not?"
"I'm only five," she said sadly. Kimmy was happy that Amy still
wanted to be her friend, even if she was the baby of the group. Carrie
had turned six a couple of weeks before and now Amy was six as well.
Amy was prevented from responding when Mina neared their hiding
place. They both held their breath as the blonde poked her hands in the
bushes for a moment, then ran off. Moments later, there was a screeching
noise. Raye immediately burst into sight running for home but Mina
tagged her out.
<She's good,> Kimmy thought. Raye was a good runner so Mina's
tagging the priestess out was quite impressive to the five year old.
"But you'll be six soon," Amy declared picking up the
conversation where they'd left off, "Mommy says so."
"It's forever," the five year old moaned. The two weeks until
her birthday seemed like an eternity to her.
Amy didn't respond when she heard Lita's voice shouting, "YOU'RE
NOT BEIN' FAIR!" She'd seen Mina completely ignore Carrie when she'd
gone after Serena. Then to have her tag Raye out was even more annoying.
"AM SO!" Mina retorted back. The blue haired child moved, stared
out of her hiding place, and saw that Lita and Mina were glaring at each
other while Reenie was moving to break up the squabble.
"You KNOW where Carrie is but you don't tag her out."
Carrie sighed as she listened to Mina and Lita's arguing in the
distance. Hearing a strange noise, she looked down and saw a small
kitten that was orange with black markings.
"Hey, kitty, where'd you come from?" she asked the kitten. She'd
never seen a kitty like this before. "You look like a tiger."
"That's her name," came a voice. Carrie jumped and saw a boy a
little older than Reenie looking at her.
"But aren't tigers boys?" the six year old questioned.
"No, watch and she'll show you," the boy instructed. Carrie
watched in fascination as the kitten started changing. Her eyes
increased as paws turned into hands and feet. It grew larger. Legs
changed and shifted position. Its body stretched and reformed. By the
time the transformation was complete, Carrie was staring up with saucer
eyes at a young woman before her. She wore a black and orange striped
leotard but the strangest things were her cat-like eyes that glinted
yellow and her pointed ears. As she grinned down at the little girl,
sharp canine teeth appeared.
"See?" the boy questioned.
"Wow! That's a good trick!" Carrie exclaimed and clapped, "What
else can she do?"
"She can count," the boy said, "Watch." Turning to the woman, he
commanded, "Tigerra, go and show 'em."
"Yes, young masterrrr," she purred out.
Amy and Kimmy, having both decided that the game was over with,
came walking out of the bushes but abruptly stopped when a strange,
almost feline, looking woman jumped out into the clearing. The children
gaped at the strange sight, then cringed as the cat-woman gave a
tremendous roar.
"It's a monster!" Kimmy declared.
<It must be a Lemure!> Amy thought. "I want my mommy!" Amy
shouted and started running towards her mother. Kimmy followed closely
behind her. <Okay, now what?> Another roar came and its shockwave
staggered Amy. She tripped and faltered.
"Come on, Amy!" Kimmy yelled seeing her friend on the ground.
"I'm coming! Run!" she commanded Kimmy and the little girl
didn't waste any time arguing.
Getting up and darting off into the bushes, Amy lifted her
transformation pen into the air. "MERCURY STAR POWER!"
"Make her stop!" Carrie wailed. She didn't want to play this
game anymore. Turning around, she gasped when she saw that the boy was
now wearing a very strange costume. "Wha-"
"ONE!"
"Who are you?"
"TWO!"
"WAIT!"
"THREE!"
"MOMMY!!!!" Carrie shrieked.
Sailor Venus, who had just rushed up to face the Lemure, heard
the shriek. Leaping high over the creature's head, she ran for where
Carrie had been. She got there just in time to see TigersEye pulling his
head from her friend's dream mirror. "FOR HURTING THOSE WE LOVE AND CARE
FOR, I AM SAILOR VENUS! IN THE NAME OF THE PLANET VENUS, I WILL PUNISH
YOU!" she declared pointing to TigersEye.
"Hey! I do the speeches 'round here!" Chibi-Moon squawked. Her
irritation grew when Venus ignored her.
"Why do you interfere, you little brat?!" TigersEye demanded,
ignoring the pink haired Scout as well, and launched an attack with his
whip.
"VENUS LOVE-CHAIN ENCIRCLE!" Sailor Venus cried out. The chain
of glowing golden hearts streaked through the air and countered the
whip's attack.
"How do we stop it?!" Sailor Moon demanded as she covered her
ears.
"She's using sonic shockwaves!" Mercury yelled back. Both Scouts
cried out as the bushes they were hiding behind were ripped away.
"AAAAAAHHHHH!!!!" Sailor Moon cried out.
"MARS CELESTIAL FIRE SURROUND!" Mars shouted, trying to distract
the creature from her princess. Her fiery rings shot forth hitting the
creature, singeing it. It retreated, howling in pain.
Tigerra sprang forward towards her fiery attacker but was halted
as a red rose flashed in front of her. She looked up to see a
tuxedo-clad figure standing atop a lamppost.
"FOR BEING AN UTTER FURBALL IN THE THROATS OF TRUTH AND
JUSTICE..."
"Oh brother," Sailor Moon muttered. <My Tuxedo Mask ain't this
bad.>
"I AM TUXEDO MASK!"
"NOW SAILOR MOON!" Chibi-Moon shouted.
"RIGHT!" Sailor Moon shouted back and, kneeling, called out,
"Please, Pegasus, protect everyone's dreams!" Rising, she rang the
Charion Bell and yelled out, "TWINKLE YELL!"
When Pegasus appeared, Sailor Chibi-Moon launched her own attack
and with a final shriek, Tigerra was banished back into its shadowy
realm.
"YOU'RE GONNA PAY, YOU SLIME COVERED, BERYL WORSHIPPING PIECE OF
SNOT!" Venus shouted as she whipped her Love-Chain around again.
TigersEye, panting with exertion, heard the cry of his Lemure as she was
defeated. Immediately, he retreated. Pegasus had not been in the girl's
mirror anyway. Although Grandma Zirconia would not be pleased with
another failure, he wasn't about to put himself at further risk.
Whirling, Sailor Venus ran over to where her friend was lying on
the ground and called out, "Carrie? Carrie?"
"Hmmm.... No, Mommy, don't wanna get up."
"Carrie!"
"Sailor Venus?" Carrie questioned.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah... I think so."
"CARRIE!"
"That's my mommy," Carrie remarked.
"I gotta motor," Venus said, "Don't worry about Mina; she's
okay."
Oddly enough, Sailor Mercury was telling a similar thing to
Kimmy. "I saw her. She's with Reenie. Don't worry." Seeing Kimmy wasn't
about to give up worrying, Mercury tried a different tact. "You're a
really great Sailor Mercury."
Kimmy, who had been looking for Amy, turned and gaped at the
Water Scout. "You know?"
"'Course, silly, you don't think we fight baddies ALL the time.
We play too."
"Really?" Kimmy asked, her eyes wide with awe and surprise.
Mercury nodded. "You really think I'm a good Mercury?" <Wow! Wait 'til I
tell Amy.>
"Yep." Hearing her mother calling her, Mercury grinned and said,
"I gotta go." Giving Kimmy a quick hug, she bounded off into the bushes
and out of sight. Once hidden, she called the other Sailor Scouts.
"Meet me here." When she got acknowledgements from the others, she
detransformed. Little Amy Anderson yawned expansively; it had been a
very full day.
