My two pfennigs regarding this matter ... excuse me
while I wriggle into this asbestos suit first. ^_^
For the last few days, there has been an amusing
stream of posts on the FFML regarding this (now)
infamous GT project by the Timerunner and assorted
friends (some of the Toledo collective and the
Scriviner). The GT project was announced and I for
one found it a rather ambitious undertaking. Duh.
The re-writing of well-known fanfics done by other
authors by an entirely different author. Ambitious
indeed since apparently, the fics chosen for the
project are known to the FFML community. Case in
point ... "TWo Hearts of One Mind" by the Scriviner.
The reprise has received much C&C (maybe because it's
an EVA fic? <snicker> If it were Dual or some other
obscure anime...) ... all of which basically say,
"It's cute, but I like the original much better."
Let me try my hand at giving a wordier version of that
blasted phrase.
After reading both fics and doing the inevitable
comparisons between them in my head, I came to a
rather amusing result. The Timerunner took the
Scrivener's fanfiction and rewrote it using his own
distinctive style ... I can see people going 'duh,
it's a reprise, moron!'. I agree. Duh. Timerunner
just basically rewrote Two Hearts. Nothing
earth-shattering (I find Rei giggling a good thing ...
always hated the ultra-robotic version of her so
common nowadays). And there lies the problem for me.
It's just a rewrite, goddamn it! The upshot of it is
it's still a damned good work that can stand on it's
own. The downside of it is ... if you're going to
rewrite a fanfiction, why not play around with it
while you're at it? Keep the original concept (of
course) but do something that'll make the original
author go, "Now why didn't I go and do that?" I
realize this may be a rather tall order, but that's
life. You know ... rewrite the story exclusively from
the POV of ONE of the characters ... de-lemonize a
lemon and still maintain the story ...give a dark fic
a happily-ever-after-ending. Oh, male bovine
excrement. I've gone totally off-tangent now.
Summation. The GT project is great and I applaud the
idea. Your version was good. Now could you please go
and give the readers a REAL re-write? By the bye ...
posting the original fic along with the retake would
be nice. ^_^
