plays and pitfalls
-------------------------
"Places everyone, places!" The school play's director strode through
the chaos of the final
dress rehearsal. Actors and crew scurried around like ants on a
kicked-over anthill. Ah, art.
It had been a chaotic couple of weeks since the last Angel attack,
more so than normal for a
school play. The front of the school had still not been repaired and many
cast members began
speculating if they were performing Macbeth instead of Snow White, because
of all the
mysterious accidents on set. Many of the original cast had been hurt.
Rock number 4 was on
her second understudy.
As the activity on stage settled down and the curtain closed,
Director-san dropped into a chair
in the front row of the theater, and pulled out a megaphone.
"Aaaand...ACTION!"
The curtain rose, and the play began. A few minutes in, Maya Ibuki
walked up to
Director-san. "Ohayo"
"Wisconsin."
"Eh?" Maya looked confused.
"Nevermind. What can I do for you, miss?"
"Well, I'm here on behalf of NERV and its parent company, Gainax.
Because your play stars
many of NERV's pilots, Gainax is considering using it for a
cross-promotion. You know, Asuka
as Snow White dolls and such. I was wondering if I could have a look around?"
"Hmm, I supp- HEY ROCK NUMBER 3! MORE FEELING THIS TIME! CONVINCE ME
YOU'RE A ROCK! I suppose you can look around, but you'll need a guide for
safety. Go
backstage and ask one of the stage hands for help."
"Thank you very much." Maya smiled. Heading backstage, she chuckled
to herself. "Ha! He
bought it completely! With all of Shinji's classmates here, and in
costume, that Red Jacket must
be just lying around for the taking! Bwa-ha-ha-ha-haaa!"
Naga abruptly popped out of nowhere. "How many times do I have to
tell you, Amelia?! It's
Oh-ho-ho-ho-ho-hohoho--oh. Who are you?"
"Uh, Director-san said I could look around backstage, and that a
stagehand would guide me."
Naga pondered this for a moment. "Actually, all of the stage hands
are occupied, either
running the play or finding and disarming traps. I'm not performing right
now, so I SUPPOSE I
could take a couple of minutes from my busy, busy schedule to guide you."
"Thank you."
Naga began to give Maya a tour of the backstage area, "Over here is
the tiger pit that
appeared two days ago."
"TIGER PIT?! Don't you mean orchestra pit?" Maya boggled.
"No," Naga dismissed this with a wave of her hand. "The orchestra pit
is over there."
Maya looked. "Why is there a tiger in it?"
Naga just shrugged. "There just is."
"Is there an orchestra in the tiger pit?"
"...You could say that..."
Maya looked a little green. "This isn't normal for school plays."
"I wouldn't know, this is the only one I've been in, and.. hey! A 500
yen coin!" Next to Naga
was a small round table, in the center of which was the coin.
"Hah! Some poor fool is out his lunch money!" Naga cackled as she
snatched the coin.
*Click* The table sank rapidly into the floor.
*THUDrollrollrollrollro...*
"Crap." Naga took off running, pursued by a 12-foot glittering disco
ball, leaving a stunned
Maya watching, slack-jawed.
"Oooo-kay." Maya shook herself. "I guess I can look around on my own,
then."
As she does, her gaze turns towards a pile of assorted bags and
clothing lying near a crate
standing by a mirror. Her eyes immediately lock onto the object of her
search. It was Gaurry's
jacket, lying right on top of the pile.
"YES!" she thought. "And not a soul around to see me. Finally my
dreams will finally come
true!" Casting one last glance around to see if there were any witnesses,
Maya darted and
grabbed for the jacket.
*ZIP-Yoink!* A pity she failed to notice the noose concealed beneath
the clothing strewn
across the ground. She now had an excellent view of the jacket, albeit
dangling by her ankle 20
feet from the floor.
"Sooo close,.... I was sooo close. Maybe if a wiggle a bit OH!". She
began to sway back and
forth. "No. No. Not a good idea."
