Spreading Wings
Part I: The Burning Ring of Fire
Scene 34.
The weather turned cloudy Tuesday afternoon. By Wednesday
afternoon it was cold and blustery. By the time I finished my last
lecture for the day, it had begun to drizzle. I rode the train across
town dreading what came next. Wednesday is runday. Worse, I knew that I
would be running alone because of the weather . The doctor's orders were
for me to run five miles every Wednesday. They said nothing about having
a sensei along to make it easier, nor did they say "unless the weather
is cold and wet." It is a Marine thing. Either you get it or you don't.
I did ride the bus home instead of walking from the station though.
Just as I finished putting on my sweats the doorbell rang. It was
Nabiki Tendo wearing a very tight pair of black shorts and a sweat
shirt. She was jogging in place.
"I heard you jarheads were too wimpy to run in the rain," she
said with a smart aleck grin, then she vanished into the mist like a
running deer.
You do know what a slow burn is, right?
