"It's time, Ash. This suffering's gone on long enough," Brock said.
"I know..." Ash sighed mournfully. "I just...isn't there any other way?"
Brock shook his head. "I'm afraid not. There isn't anything anyone can do
about this. Just let it go."
Ash bowed his head, trying not to cry. "Al...alright." His voice became
hoarse. "Pikachu...do it. Make it as quick and painless as possible."
"Chuu." Pikachu fought the tears as it performed the task at hand.
A terrible, blinding flash. The crackle of high voltage. A brief scream,
which died quickly. The body twitched, then fell to the bed, lying still.
Brock bowed his head in respect. Ash had not looked up, and silent tears
splashed from his cheeks to the floor. Pikachu's mournful weeping mirrored
its trainer's. Togepi began to wail.
At length, Ash wiped at his eyes with the back of his hand, and looked up,
taking in the sight of her one last time.
"Goodbye, Misty. I'm sorry."
