*4am - Drive*
She's gone out again. She may have thought I
wouldn't know, but I felt her slide out of the bed,
heard the car starting up.
I'd like to know what sends her out like this,
to drive the empty streets in the pre-dawn hours.
I wish she'd tell me when she's going.
------------------------------------------------------
Driving, feeling the road slide away under my
wheels. Remembering the looks on their faces as I
stand by, restrained by a cool hand or a soft word.
I don't know how much longer I can stand it.
Is this really the only way? We're supposed to be the
good guys, so why are we just letting others suffer?
------------------------------------------------------
Her spot on the bed is getting cold. I don't
like sleeping alone anymore.
Every time she does this, I lie awake waiting
for her. Afraid she won't come back this time. But
when she comes in I always pretend to be asleep. In
the morning, it will be as if this never happened.
Does she go anywhere in particular, I wonder?
Or does she just drive?
------------------------------------------------------
Running away. That's all I ever do. Running
away from who I am, running away from what I have to
do. Running away on the track, so fast I catch up
with myself.
And now I'm out here, trying to drive away
from the warrior I'm supposed to be.
------------------------------------------------------
I'm not as cold as I seem. It hurts me too
when I see innocents suffer.
But I have to be the cold one, the focused one.
Because she can't be. The only thing distant
about her is her name. She needs involvement, she
needs to give her compassion, her anger.
That's what makes me love her. And when I
realize how cold I've become, I wonder how she can
still love me.
------------------------------------------------------
I know I can never run away from everything.
No matter how fast I go, they'll catch up. But I
think I can deal with that.
As long as I have her, I'll be fine.
------------------------------------------------------
This can't go on forever. Someday this job
will be done, and both of us will be free again. I
can wait.
As long as I have her, I'll be fine.
