 OSCAR, THE IMMORTAL


 I was just reading "Minako: Warrior, Princess, Sidekick?". In that
story, Minako and Artemis get zapped back to Xena's times, Minako
gets amnesia and becomes Gabrielle, and Artemis is taken by
Amazons to the temple of Artemis as the goddess's holy cat.

 When two bloodthirsty goddesses attacked the temple, I remembered
something. In the 4th century BC, there lived a guy named
Herostratos. He was a simple shoemaker who decided to be famous for
all times. To do so, he set fire to Artemis' (the goddess, not the
cat) temple in his home town. Although he was sentenced to death and
oblivion, people still remembered him. Now, as all the gods of Mount
Olympus have become myths, the shoemaker that that burned a temple is
still remembered and his name is a metaphor to show anyone who wants
to be famous at all cost.

 I was reading the above-mentioned fanfic in MSTed form. (Actually
a big mistake. You should never read good fanfics MSTed or you'll get
the urge to scream "Will you guys shut up already?!?!" at the 
computer screen. Anyway, I did.) And what is the first thing that
comes to mind when you put together "Artemis" and "MST"? Can you say
"worst SI ever"? Can you say "Megane 6.7"? Can you say "saia-jin
hermaphrodite with a name like the Academy Award"?

 That's right. Oscar.

 Yes, the (in)famous author of the most disgusting Sailor Moon lemon
ever. And you know what? I believe that by doing that, he also has
guaranteed himself near-immortal fame.
 Sailor Moon is at a decline, whatever anyone might say. There has
been NOTHING new in that subject for a few years. Japan has already
dumped it into the archives. On the polish IRC channel #anime-pl,
saying "I like Sailor Moon" equals saying "I'm an ignorant newbie,
make fun of me!". America turns to Pokemon. The FFML is flooded with
Ranma.
 But still, the names "Oscar" and "Artemis' lover" are easily
recognized, and probably will be, while fanfiction and MSTing lasts,
even after all Sailor Moon fans desert the show, even when the
best authors of yesterday will not like to be reminded what they had
written "all that time ago".
 Even though he is Net-dead, Oscar will live on rather in the same
way Herostratos did. The Greek shoemaker and the hermaphrodite
fanfic writer, both eternally famous because they mutilated Artemis.

 Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a fanfic idea to work on. It
concerns PenPen and a woman named Magdalena Knapik who comes from
Poland to take over NERV and generally mess around with the NGE
storyline.
