Yes, they did do the same thing.  They threw bombs. Bombs are funny things.
 No matter what their personalities, whether annoying or dead serious,
bombs explode.  Many of them do so in a fiery manner.  Nothing in "Cinders"
suggests any difference in the bombs strength or compositions.  Okonomiyaki
bombs are okonomiyaki bombs.  They go boom.  They make fire.  Fire can burn.

If the bombs had been this dangerous in the real story, it would have been
out of character for them to use the bombs.

No, if the things had been that way in TOS, then that would be completely
in character.  Doesn't TOS define what "in character" means?  That's part
of what "canon" means.

I've wasted enough of my time trying to teach you that the sky is blue,
something that you should be able to see for yourself with a minimum of
effort.  If you want to rail at the world for not making all fanfics
perfect copies of Takahashi's original work, then go right ahead.
