Only Love
A Rurouni Kenshin songfic by Kei Masaki
(keiichi-dono@geocities.com)
RK is the property of Nobuhiro Watsuki, Fuji TV, SPE
Visual Works, and anyone else I forgot to mention.
"Only Love" was composed by Stephen Bishop (IMHO, one of the
later 20th Century's
best songwriters), Burt Bacharach, and Carole Bayer Sager.
Older writers may remember this song from the 80's movie
Arthur. Even older writers may know his other songs, such
as "It Might Be You" (from Tootsie) or "On And On"
(at least anyone who went to Salem Academy between autumn
'95 and summer '97 ^^).
This is in response to all the country-based RK songfics
I've seen. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but a
songfic from a different genre of music
is overdue.
Where are you going, you're already there
(Kenshin walking through Tokyo, stopping in front of the
Kamiya dojo,
smiling fondly as he sees Kaoru)
When will you see it's the same everywhere
(Yumi watching Shishio as he sleeps, gently caressing his
face)
Run if you want to, there's no one to blame
(Tsubame glancing at Yahiko as she carries food to a table)
Find all the pieces, they're always the same
(Kaoru cheerily greeting Kenshin as he returns with the
groceries)
'Cause only love can find your heart
(Misao running into the rain carrying an extra umbrella for
Aoshi)
'Cause only love takes you in
(Megumi bandaging Sanosuke's hands -again-, while lecturing
him gently)
It's a game only fools can win
(Yahiko bashfully giving Tsubame a bouquet of flowers)
A name in the phone book, it's someone you know
(Aoshi looking up at the Aoi-ya's awning/sign as he walks
by)
A face in the window, with no place to go
(Kaoru looking out the Aoi-ya's window, hoping to see
Kenshin)
Tell her a story, be sure that it's true
(Saitoh trying to decide just what to tell Tokio was the
reason for his absence -this- time)
Now she's in love and it's all up to you
(Kamatari gazing at Shishio across the room, his cheeks
slightly red)
'Cause only love can find your heart
(Saitoh thinking of Tokio, a non-malicious smile for once
gracing his features)
Cause only love takes you in
(A younger Anji helping Tsubaki put the younger children to
sleep,
their hands touching and lingering for a moment)
It's a game only fools can win
(A bloodied and bruised Kenshin, teetering on the edge of
oblivion,
but then thinking of Kaoru and somehow rallying)
Maybe she will believe it if you want her to
(Sanosuke walking by Megumi's clinic, glancing in at her for
a long moment,
then looking away and continuing on just as she looks up)
When will you know that it's all up to you
(Aoshi's eyes watching Misao as she rushes up to the temple)
It's all up to you
(Shishio kissing Yumi before his fight with Kenshin)
It's all up to you (she's in love with you, boy)
(Kenshin and Kaoru sitting on the Aoi-ya's roof the night
before his battle with Shishio,
his hand resting gently atop hers)
It's all up to you
(Okina and Hiko watching the goings-on between the would-be
couples with
all-knowing looks on their faces--Hiko's being more of a
smirk)
It's all up to you....
(A montage of the various "couples" in moments of
closeness--not
THAT kind, hentais!--under a calm, starry night)
I wish I could tell you where to find an mp3 of this, but I
doubt there are many Stephen Bishop
sites on the 'Net. Your best bet would be to look for his
CD
"On and On: The Hits of Stephen Bishop" at your nearest
music/video outlet.
Note to self: next time, use songs that your audience will
recognize ^^.
