I had a similar problem with the Akane story - Akane may have been

before I finally gave that story up completely.

Hmm. Well, I'd say the Akane story revolved much less around the original
characters than the Silver Millenium chapter. The only one really
critical to the story was Kent; most of the other protagonists in center
stage were Ranma, Sailor Moon, and Tenchi characters. And while there
were some scenes that revolved very much around the original characters,
there were only a handful of new characters, which made it easy enough for
me to keep track of them. They're introduced gradually, and there's only
five or six to remember.

The SM chapter, on the other hand, almost entirely revolves around new
characters who drive the plot, in the first two segments. This may change
now that the Tenchi cast has just fallen into Benten's hands. Although a
few of them, I can now see to be the past lives of various 20th century
characters, such as Mandon and Daimon (Who are Mendou and his sister).

That's my impression, anyway.
