Hyuuga and Aoba were in the cafeteria. Central Dogma was quiet, with the
MAGI running mandatory defragmentation and scanning maintenance programs,
the rest of the bridge crew had headed off to various other parts of NERV
Headquarters.
"Slow day, eh, Makoto?" Aoba asked as he popped open a soda can he
retrieved from the dispenser.
Hyuuga simply nodded. No Angels for the past week or so had made their
presence felt. All in all, a rather pleasant change from yelling about AT
fields, battery charges, Blue and Orange Patterns and Progressive What-nots.
The door slid open and a menacing glint of light was seen in the darkness
beyond of the hall.
Aoba stopped in mid-gulp and sputtered. "Commander! Good morning!"
Hyuuga half jumped out of his sprawl. To the best of his knowledge, the
Commander wasn't supposed to return for another two days from that
conference of his.
Commander Ikari walked into the room and nodded at the two techs. His eyes
then glanced at the clock on the wall. "Quite early to be on a break, is
it not?"
Hyuuga gulped. Uh-oh, he thought.
Aoba began to stammer profusely. "Um.. ah, well... that is, sir."
The Supreme Commander icily stared at the two. Hyuuga began thinking of
unemployment lines, and the liability of their MAGI clearances in the
outside world.
And then, much to their amazement, grabbed a soda can from the dispenser,
plopped down on the couch and raised his feet on another chair.
"So what's been happening, boys?"

"Are you sure it isn't due to an Angel?" asked Misato, as she crowded over
Aoba's shoulder to look at the display terminal.
"I'm positive, if it were, the MAGI would be screaming bloody murder right
now." Aoba typed into his keyboard as the subject of their attention moved
out of the cameras range.
"Though it'd be rather ingenious... hey, there he is!"
The security cameras on Level 17 whirred into action. The subject of their
scrutiny kept walking down the corridor. A door hissed open as a NERV ID
card was swiped into the slot. The figure stepped through the dark doorway,
which promptly and efficiently hissed shut.
Misato frowned. "Whose room is that?"
Aoba punched up the map... and stared. "It's Doctor Akagi's."
Misato wasn't at all surprised when a few minutes afterwards, distinctly
feminine giggling was picked up by the audio sensors on the camera trained on
Ritsuko's office.

"Umm... Asuka..." Shinji stammered.
"What?" asked Asuka in a bored tone.
"Well... did you notice anything weird about my father today?"
"Weird? What do you mean?" Asuka yawned as she and Shinji made their way
up the escalator from NERV Headquarters.
"Well..."
"Well what? Speak up baka! I don't have all day!"
"Remember when we ran into him?"
"Yes?"
"Didn't you notice? He... smiled."

Fuyutsuki stood in the Commander's Area at Central Dogma. He glanced down
at the heart of all NERV operations. Maya, Hyuuga and Aoba sat at the
terminals monitoring Tokyo-3 and the Sub-Levels of NERV headquarters.
Ritsuko was noticeably absent, having gone home complaining about "fatigue".
He had been receiving reports from the Intelligence Division of the
Commander's... odd behavior since he had returned. From his incessant
grinning and whistling in the hallways, to that loving kiss smacked on Unit
01. And those were the OFFICIALY reported incidents. There were the
questions from all the other Divisions about the commander's mental state.
Fuyutsuki turned as the faint sound of whistling came up the hallway
leading to the loft. He remembered the last time Gendo looked like this.
And that was a long time ago. Before... the accident. I wonder, he thought,
could he have gone... bananas? Had the responsibility of protecting the
human race caused him to finally
snap?
"Sensei, good morning!" Gendo jauntily waved as he walked springingly to
his chair and sat. He leaned forward, and clasped his hands in front of his
face, firmly locking the fingers. The staff below glanced up and sighed in
relief, this was
normal at least.
Then he leaned back in his chair, and put his hands behind his neck.
A muttered "Doh!" was faintly heard from the lower levels.
Gendo Ikari glanced at the main screen, currently showing a dazzling view
of the sunset off Tokyo-3's skyline.
"Lovely weather, eh, sensei?", he asked as a flash of crimson light
glanced of his spectacles.
"Quite, Ikari. And I think you should have your glasses changed."
