EPISODE ONE

Story and Screenplay by James Epnett and Witold Tietze

EXT. SPACE/TIME VORTEX (SFX)

We pass through the space/time vortex, a blue swirl of nothingness, where
neither time not space exist.

MOVE IN towards the heart of a particularly vicious-looking swirl of
non-existence. It resembles in some ways the eye of Jupiter, and it evokes
the dangerous and violent nature of this place.

As we come ever closer to the violent swirl, it begins to dissipate, almost
like a fractal.

Suddenly, we HEAR the sound of the TARDIS engine filling this blue void.

The blue police box suddenly flies past our field of view, the engine
beginning to GROAN.

As we FOLLOW the ship, we see that it is approaching a newly formed
resonant shockwave which is passing through the blue void, creating ripples
in it like a stone thrown in a pond.

The shockwave grows ever nearer to the TARDIS, ultimately colliding with
it.

An array of different colour sparks fly throughout the vortex, all
emanating from the TARDIS. The TARDIS is ricocheted away from the
shockwave, before it begins to tumble away from us.

Very soon, the ship begins to disappear, as if it is dissolving into the
very fabric of the vortex. But we soon see that it is indeed vanishing from
the vortex, until we can no longer see it.

CUT TO:

MAIN TITLE.

FADE UP TO:

INT. APARTMENT (LIVING ROOM) DAY

A couple of guys in their early twenties, NICK and JAMES, are watching
television. Nick is sprawled across the couch, while James is lying face up
on the floor, his head tilted back so he can see the screen, albeit
upside-down.

A stereo, situated directly next to the television, is
blasting out rock music at an alarming volume, almost muting out the
television completely.

CUT TO:

INT. APARTMENT (KITCHEN) DAY

Noiselessly (at least to us the music), the TARDIS materialises in the
middle of the filthy kitchen. However, it does so rather shakily.

Due to the noise, of course, the two slobs of dwellers remain blissfully
unaware of the arrival.

The DOCTOR steps out of the TARDIS, looks around at the kitchen, and ducks
his head back into the blue box.

DOCTOR
(muffled)
It seems safe to come out.

He pulls his head back out. BRIAN, his companion, follows him out, closing
the door behind him.

BRIAN
	(genuinely unimpressed)
Nice.

DOCTOR
Come now. We could have done worse.

BRIAN
We have. Still, at least its safe.
	(turns to face the Doctor)
It is safe, isnt it?

DOCTOR
Oh yes. Im sure it must be. It looks like Earth, so I dare say well be
all right for the time being, at least.

BRIAN
What do you think happened to us?

DOCTOR
You mean the shockwave?

BRIAN
Well, it did ground us.

DOCTOR
It certainly did.
	(beat)
Im not sure. It seemed indicative of a high powered super-light radio wave
transmission, but that seems unlikely.

BRIAN
As always, Doctor, it seems that youve left me with two questions at once.

DOCTOR
And they are?

BRIAN
First, what are you talking about? And second, why does whatever you just
said seem unlikely?

DOCTOR
A radio transmission, by its very nature, cannot exceed the speed of light.

BRIAN
That much I understand, Doctor. Im not an idiot.

DOCTOR
	(oblivious to the jibe)
So, in order for the sender to get the signal to its destination more
quickly than the speed of light will allow, they must cheat somewhat.

BRIAN
Isnt that normally done by sending the signal through a wormhole?

DOCTOR
That is the general method, but others are possible, if far less safe.

BRIAN
Are you saying that someone was foolish enough to have sent a signal
through the space/time vortex?

DOCTOR
In a nutshell. The resulting shockwave from the signals incompatibility
with the vortex interface is probably what knocked us out of flight and
back into space/time.

BRIAN
I thought it was the province of the Time Lords to put a stop to that sort
of practice.

DOCTOR
Theoretically. But, like any governing body, theyll only serve the good of
the community if its to their advantage.

CUT TO:

INT. APARTMENT (LIVING ROOM) DAY

Nick, avidly watching the screen in front of him, pricks up his ear as
though hes heard something over the music.

He gets up from the couch.

CUT TO:

INT. APARTMENT (KITCHEN) DAY

The Doctor and Brian, continuing.

BRIAN
You said that this is probably what happened to us. Why cant you be sure?

DOCTOR
Because the signal came from this planet. And Earth has never had, nor will
it ever have, the capability to beam a radio signal into the vortex.

BRIAN
Then theres an extra-terrestrial on this planet. We should seek it out and
sue for damages.

DOCTOR
I dont know about seeking damages, but I agree that we should try to make
contact with it.

BRIAN
And the TARDIS?

DOCTOR
	(slightly puzzled)
Is right behind you.

BRIAN
I know that, but what are we going to do about it?

DOCTOR
I dont know. Sue the alien life form for damages?

BRIAN
Very funny. We need to repair it.

DOCTOR
Indeed we do, but thats going to be difficult on Earth in this period.
Wed be far better off seeking out the responsible party first and seeing
if they can help us out.

BRIAN
Isnt there the possibility, though, that they may be dangerous?

DOCTOR
Come now, Brian. You know I can never be one hundred percent certain of
that. But this is a relatively secure planet, and the dcor in this kitchen
indicates to me that it will be for a couple of hundred or so years to
come.
	(beat)
Happy now?

BRIAN
No. I dont see how this dcor relates to the nature of the alien.

DOCTOR
	(moves very close to Brian)
Extra-terrestrial politics, Brian. Twentieth century Earth is hardly known
for losing its battles with hostile aliens.
	(half to himself)
Besides which, they were always coming to me for help with time technology.

BRIAN
Well, at least youre right about the immediate vicinity. I see no hint of
danger for a change.

Just as the Doctor throws Brian a sarcastic look, Nick runs in from the
living room, wielding a steel baseball bat and screaming blue murder.

He slams the bat down over Brian, who tries to guard himself from the blow
by raising an arm over his head. The bat comes down on his arm, and he
crumples with the force of the hit, falling to his knees.

Nick swings around for a roundhouse blow to the Doctors midriff. The
Doctor applies two fingers to the middle of Nicks breastplate. Nick
freezes in his tracks, like a statue.

DOCTOR
Do you mind not brandishing that thing quite so violently, hmm?

Nick tries to speak, but cannot.

DOCTOR
Drop the bat, please.

The bat falls to the floor, clanking.

The Doctor releases his fingers. Nick slumps to the floor.

DOCTOR
Are you all right?

BRIAN
Ill live.

DOCTOR
	(smiles)
Venusian Karate. Very useful indeed.

They head out of the kitchen, leaving behind a stunned Nick.

CUT TO:

INT. APARTMENT (LIVING ROOM) DAY

The Doctor and Brian walk in together. The Doctor takes a device from his
pocket (which looks like an oversized television remote control), and aims
it at the stereo and television. He presses a button on the device, and the
electronic equipment switches itself off.

DOCTOR
	(to Brian)
Universal remote. Clever, eh?

BRIAN
It certainly is.

James peels himself off the floor, and faces the two travellers.

JAMES
And you are?

DOCTOR
(offers his hand to be shaken)
Passers by. I am known by many as the Doctor, and Brian is this gentleman
next to me.

James doesnt quite know what to make of the situation. In the end, he
figures itll be best just to go along for the ride so he does. He shakes
the Doctors hand.

JAMES
Im James.

DOCTOR
Hello, James. Pleased to meet you. In your kitchen just now are an obsolete
British Police Box and the one man on this planet who is probably more
confused than you are at the moment. We would appreciate it greatly if we
(MORE)
DOCTOR (CONTD)
might be allowed to leave the Police Box in your kitchen for a day or two,
as its going nowhere fast. I will gladly pay you a tidy sum if need be.

JAMES
	(very confused)
Please dont kill me.

DOCTOR
Thats the spirit! The fellow in there, on the other hand, you may do with
as you wish. Now, the year?

JAMES
Huh?

DOCTOR
The year. Come now, it cant be that difficult.

JAMES
Umm Nineteen ninety-five.

DOCTOR
And the date is?

JAMES
The twentieth January.

DOCTOR
Ah. A fine Friday, for the time of year. A cloudless sky, if were in the
right part of the country.

BRIAN
And are we?

DOCTOR
	(heading for front door)
Probably not. Still, where does pessimism get you, eh?

CUT TO:

INT. KORBEN REDFERDS HOUSE DAY

We are in a very empty room in this dimly lit house. All that is present in
the room is a chair, on which sits KORBEN REDFERD.

He is looking directly at the wall in front of him, an expression of
relaxation and thought on his face.

As he watches, a six foot by six foot square begins to move away from the
wall panelling. It looks like the wall, but is clearly a disguise.

As it moves, it reveals from behind it a futuristic television monitor.

The monitor has three knobs at the bottom, a lever that slides
horizontally, and three switches.

The wall panel stops in mid air, then begins to move left. It turns its
edge towards the wall and then enters the wall.

The monitor lights up a pale white colour.

ANGLE on Korben, now standing as if he were a soldier.

A VOICE emanates from the monitor but, due to the ANGLE, we cannot see who
it is.

VOICE
Where is the boy?

KORBEN
(trying to conceal disdain in his voice)
I will deliver him shortly, Mister Bilk.

VOICE
We must have him soon. If you fail us, you will die.

KORBEN
Do not worry, Mister Bilk. I will not fail you.

VOICE
My our associates have little patience. You have twenty-four hours in
which to find the boy.

KORBEN
Yes, Mister Bilk.

ANGLE on the screen, but the picture has already faded to black.

The wall panel returns and covers the screen.

Korben returns to his chair. He sits and puts his hand on his head.

KORBEN
You wont have the upper hand forever, Mister Bilk. But, for now, you serve
well as master.

CUT TO:

EXT. OLD HOUSE DAY

The TARDIS is now here.

CUT TO:

INT. TARDIS (CONSOLE ROOM)

Brian is standing by the console, while the Doctor is lying under it,
fussing about with some components.

BRIAN
I really do wish youd keep your mind made up about things in future.

DOCTOR
	(keeps head ducked under)
How do you mean?

BRIAN
Well, it wouldve been just as easy to have left the TARDIS in that
apartment.

DOCTOR
Aside from the fact that those two fellows looked thoroughly bemused when
we arrived, Ive always preferred to keep her outdoors. I once parked her
in the Louvre and I could only access the thing during open hours.
	(pops his head up)
Its quite annoying, you know.

BRIAN
So, where do you think we should start?

DOCTOR
Start what?

BRIAN
	(sighs in despair)
Looking for this alien.

DOCTOR
Were not doing that yet, Brian. Weve got to look for a replacement Time
Phase Calibrator first. It was cracked during the initial collision with
the shockwave, but fell out of phase completely with that last trip.

BRIAN
So were stuck because of that short hop?

DOCTOR
A short hop was all it had left anyway. No more than a few kilometres.
	(beat)
Without it, the TARDISs inner and outer dimensions cant stabilise
simultaneously in vortex. Its analogous to electrons and the Heisenberg
Uncertainty Principle, in a way.

The Doctor prizes a small piece of technology from the panel, looks deeply
into it. The device is about the size of the Doctors fist. Its almost a
cylinder, with a two inch long rod sticking out at either end. It is
divided into three sections but, at the moment, is fully assembled.

DOCTOR
There!
	(beat)
Which is why we first need to seek out a quantum physicist. On Earth in the
twentieth century, no one else would have any idea where to start in
repairing it.

BRIAN
Then were not going to go and look for that alien.

DOCTOR
Probably best if we dont, as you said. Might be dangerous. Besides, Im
now fully confident that certain humans of this period are more than
capable of repairing the faulty component, so theres really no need.

BRIAN
Its a pity you cant repair it yourself.

DOCTOR
I know a little of whats required to repair it, but I never specialised in
quantum mechanics.

BRIAN
Then weve got a problem.

DOCTOR
	(looks up at Brian)
Not if we can find someone locally who can help us.

CUT TO:

INT. ORE CITY HIGH SCHOOL (CLASSROOM) DAY

After school chemistry class semi-tutorial.

Eleven-year-old DARIAN McCARSON sits in front of a group of older kids, but
is turned around to face them.

Most of them dont really care that hes helping the teacher by trying to
instruct them, but a couple are keen to learn. Even so, by the looks on
their faces, he is clearly confusing them.

DARIAN
So the catalyst acts as a kind of jumping off point for the reaction. It
isnt involved in the actual change, but nothing would happen without it.
You get what Im saying?

CARRIE
(confused)
Not a clue.

CARRIE is sitting in front of Darian, and is turned around facing him.

KEITH is sitting next to him on the left, and JENNIFER is sitting behind
him.

DARIAN
Its all very simple if you keep a few basic tenets in mind. You see

Jennifer cuts in.

JENNIFER
(whispers)
So, whats a kid as young as you doing in tenth grade, Darian? You just
here to bug us with all this science crap?

DARIAN
I was too smart for my grade. My teachers couldnt keep up with me. Now
they get me to help bring up the grade point averages of all my classes by
tutoring at these after school meets.
	(thinks quickly)
What do you mean, bug you?

JENNIFER
Well, youre one hell of an annoying brat, arent you? No one likes a
know-all.

DARIAN
Im not a know-all. But what I do know is the reason Im here. And some
people in this class actually want to hear what I have to say.

JENNIFER
This whole meets a stupid idea. Why dont you go back to the fifth grade,
kid. The teacher never made us sit through these things before you joined
the class.

CARRIE
	(to Jennifer)
If you dont care, shut up. Im trying to learn here.

JENNIFER
Whatever.

Jennifer moves away, starts talking to some other kids who arent enjoying
the idea of staying after school.

DARIAN
Thanks.

CARRIE
You can thank me by explaining this material so that it makes sense.

DARIAN
I thought I was.

CARRIE
Maybe youre just too uber-smart. So, what else do you know stuff about?

DARIAN
A bunch of stuff. Computer programming, biology, physics. Got a prize for a
college level microbiology quiz last year.

CARRIE
Like I said too smart.

CUT TO:

INT. TARDIS (CONSOLE ROOM) DAY

Brian enters from another part of the TARDIS, wearing a change of costume
he is now wearing street clothes.

The Doctor remains as before.

BRIAN
(frowning)
Why do I have to wear these stupid clothes?

DOCTOR
Because thats how people of youre apparent age dress in this time, on
this planet. You saw how those two lads were dressed back in that
apartment.

Brian eyes him angrily, tries to think of something to fight back with.

BRIAN
	(sarcastically)
Yeah, and thats how people of your apparent age dress on this planet.

The Doctor looks at his clothes (black shirt, black duster, black pants,
black boots) and then looks back at Brian.

DOCTOR
And whats wrong with my clothes?

BRIAN
You look like a twenty-year-old, and you dress like a man going to a
funeral.

DOCTOR
(smiles)
Looks can be deceiving. I am a Time Lord, after all.

BRIAN
Yes, but if youll remember, you didnt always look this young.

DOCTOR
I explained regeneration to you when you rejoined my travels.

BRIAN
You said it was some sort of rejuvenation, but this is ridiculous. You used
to look a good twenty Earth years older than you do now.

DOCTOR
That was two regenerations ago. And there was the problem with my most
recent metamorphosis.

BRIAN
The issue with that Celestial Toymaker fellow?

DOCTOR
Thats right. Its no small wonder the physical side of my regeneration
went wildly out of control with my subconscious floating around in another
dimension for all that time.

BRIAN
Fair enough. But you still look at little strange.

DOCTOR
	(smiles)
I do what I can.
	(beat)
Right. Shall we head off.

BRIAN
Where to?

DOCTOR
To find a phone book.

BRIAN
A what?

DOCTOR
Come on, Ill explain as we go.

Brian picks up the damaged calibrator.

The Doctor activates the door control, and the door begins to open.

CUT TO:

EXT. OLD HOUSE DAY

They step out of the ship, the Doctor locking the door. The pair set off,
walking onto the road and heading for the highway.

BRIAN
Well?

DOCTOR
(distracted)
Hmm? Oh, yes. Well, there is a person living in this town who, in a few
years, will write a groundbreaking tome on quantum mechanics, amongst other
phenomenal achievements. Right now, unfortunately, hes an underrated
genius.

BRIAN
	(hopeful)
Then you know where we are?

DOCTOR
I checked the TARDIS controls while you were changing. It seems weve
arrived in Ore City, Texas, in America.
	(beat)
As I was saying, hes a genius, but hes still young.

The Doctor has a slightly worried look on his face. Brian sees this and
uses it to his advantage.

BRIAN
How young?

DOCTOR
Hes eleven. So, obviously, well have to be careful not to influence
his intellectual balance so early in the piece.

BRIAN
You mean we could cause him to become a bum or something?

DOCTOR
Or worse. We may end up depriving this planet of one of its greatest minds.

They continue down the road, stopping on the highway, and then crossing
when it is clear.

CUT TO:

EXT. SCHOOL YARD DAY

Darian is standing here, waiting for his mother to arrive.

ANGLE on Korben. He is standing near the library, watching Darian from
behind a rock pillar. He is wearing a long brown overcoat and a brown hat.

ANGLE on Darian, who is now sitting on a stone bench.

ANGLE on Korben as he begins walking towards Darian.

ANGLE on Darian, who is now aware that Korben is approaching him. He stands
and begins moving towards the school doors, a worried look now on his face.

ANGLE on Korben, who has stopped walking.

KORBEN
Darian, wait!

Darian stops and turns, a confused look on his face.

DARIAN
Do I know you?

Korben begins to approach him once again. He stops about three paces away
from the child.

KORBEN
No, you dont.

DARIAN
Then what do you want?

A car pulls up. Korben looks at it quickly, then turns and begins to walk
swiftly away.

Darian shrugs and moves towards the car.

DARIAN
	(to driver)
Hi mom.

Darian gets into the car and closes the door.

MOTHER
Who was that man?

DARIAN
I dont know.

MOM
Well, remember what I told you.

MOM AND DARIAN (TOGETHER)
Dont talk to strangers.

DARIAN
I know, mom.

The car turns and drives away.

CUT TO:

INT. P&L SUPERSTOP DAY

The Doctor and Brian are seated at a table, searching through a phone book.

BRIAN
Okay, here.
(He puts his finger on the book)
Adrian McCarson, Darron McCarson, and Evan McCarson.

DOCTOR
Okay, lets start with Adrian.

The Doctor gets up and walks over to a nearby pay phone.

CUT TO:

INT. MCCARSON HOUSE (KITCHEN) DAY

ANGLE on a telephone in here. It begins to RING.

EVAN McCARSON, a tall, slender man, enters the kitchen and answers the
phone.

EVAN
Hello, McCarson residence.

CUT TO:

INT. P&L SUPERSTOP DAY

The Doctor stands at the telephone.

DOCTOR
Hello, Mister Evan McCarson, is it?

EVAN (V.O.)
Yes.

DOCTOR
Hello, yes. I was hoping I could have a word with your son, Darian.

CUT TO:

INT. MCCARSON HOUSE (KITCHEN) DAY

EVAN
Im sorry, hes not in right now. May I ask who this is.

CUT TO:

INT. P&L SUPERSTOP DAY

The Doctor looks at Brian, a worried look on his face.

DOCTOR
	(to Brian, hand over mouthpiece)
Success. This is the right number.
	(to Evan)
Umm... This is... Doctor McDermott, Doctor Paul McDermott. Up at the
school. I wanted to talk to him about a, umm... test he took yesterday.

EVAN (V.O.)
You sound a bit young to be a teacher.

DOCTOR
Well, Mr. McCarson, I am twenty-seven. Fresh out of University, Ill admit,
but fully qualified all the same.

EVAN (V.O.)
Oh, okay. Well, can I get a number where he can reach you?

The Doctor looks at the number on the phone.

DOCTOR
Yes, um, five-six-five-three-nine-o-six.

EVAN (V.O.)
Okay. Ill have him call you when he comes in.

DOCTOR
Thank you very much.

The Doctor hangs the phone up.

He sits down on a step near where he is standing.

Brian, who is still standing, moves towards the Doctor, a look of curiosity
on his face.

BRIAN
So?

DOCTOR
Not in.

Brian sighs and sits next to the Doctor.

BRIAN
Now what?

DOCTOR
We wait.

CUT TO:

INT. KORBENS HOUSE DAY

Korben is standing in front of the monitor again.

VOICE
Report.

KORBEN
I still have not captured him, Mister Bilk. But I will soon.

VOICE
I want no more excuses. If you fail me one last time, you will die. But
this time you must be punished.

Suddenly, a purple and red light begins to flash throughout the room.

Korben doubles over in pain. He grabs his ears, screaming, trying to block
out the horrible SCREECHING noise that is filling the room.

The lights soon begin to fade, the noise leaves, and Korben falls to his
knees, a very tired, agonised look on his face.

VOICE
Do not fail me again.

KORBEN
(sluggish)
Yes... Sir.

Korben slumps over and falls on the floor, passing out.

CUT TO:

EXT. MCCARSON HOUSE DAY

A small red car pulls up the driveway the same one that Darians mother
was driving earlier.

Darian and his mom, SUSAN, exit the car. They walk up to the entrance to
the house and go inside.

CUT TO:

INT. MCCARSON HOUSE (LIVING ROOM) DAY

Darians father, Evan, is sitting in a chair next to the television set.

DARIAN
Hey, dad.

EVAN
(smiles)
Hey buddy. How was school today?

DARIAN
Fine.

EVAN
Hey, some teacher called for you. Said he needed to talk to you about a
(MORE)
EVAN (CONTD)
test.
(hands him a slip of paper)
Heres his number.

Darian takes the paper, reads the number, heads for the phone.

CUT TO:

EXT. P&L SUPERSTOP DAY

The Doctor and Brian are sitting on the steps outside the store.

They both look as if they are about to fall asleep.

Suddenly, the telephone rings inside. The Doctors eyes widen, as do
Brians.

They both leap up and head for the phone inside.

CUT TO:

INT. P&L SUPERSTOP DAY

The Doctor picks up the phone and puts it up to his ear.

DOCTOR
Hello?

CUT TO:

INT. MCCARSON HOUSE (KITCHEN) DAY

Darian is on the phone, as before.

The remainder of this conversation cuts back and forth between the Doctor
and Darian.

DARIAN
Hello, this is Darian McCarson. Is this Doctor Paul McDermott?

DOCTOR
Yes, it is.

DARIAN
My father said you called earlier today, about a test.

DOCTOR
Yes, well, I can probably explain that. You see, I will be teaching your,
umm....

DARIAN
Physics class?

DOCTOR
Thats right. Anyway, I need to talk to you about your grades. Is there any
chance you could stop by at P&Ls Superstop so that we might have a word
about them?

Darian eyes the phone suspiciously.

DARIAN
Why there?

DOCTOR
Well, the school hasnt given me an office yet, you see, and my apartment
is still full of unpacked boxes, so I thought the Superstop might make a
nice change.

DARIAN
(hesitantly)
Okay. When?

DOCTOR
How does now sound?

DARIAN
Ill be there in ten minutes.

Darian hangs up the phone. He smiles.

DARIAN
	(to himself)
That was the weakest story Ive ever heard. Still, its a public place. How
bad can it be?

He walks out of the room.

CUT TO:

INT. P&L SUPERSTOP DAY

The Doctor hangs the phone up and turns to face Brian.

Brian eyes the Doctor wearily.

BRIAN
I hate to say it, but that sounded seriously unconvincing.

The Doctor shrugs.

DOCTOR
Well, Im not in the habit of lying. But it worked.

Brian sighs.

BRIAN
Lets hope so, because if it didnt, were stuck.

The Doctor and Brian walk back to the yellow tables and sit down.

CUT TO:

EXT. STREET (OUTSIDE DARIANS HOUSE) DAY

Darian steps out of the house, starts to walk down the street.

ANGLE on Korben, who is watching Darian from behind a tree. After a little
while, Korben begins to follow Darian.

CUT TO:

EXT. P&L SUPERSTOP DAY

We now see Darian walking up to the store from behind it. He looks around
and stops. He catches a glimpse of Korben, but the man disappears. He
shrugs and continues into the store.

CUT TO:

INT. P&L SUPERSTOP DAY

Darian looks around, sees the Doctor and Brian, but disregards them as
people hes never seen before.
ANGLE on the Doctor and Brian. Brian taps on the Doctors shoulder, gets
his attention. He points at Darian.

BRIAN
(whispers)
You think thats him?

The Doctor turns and looks at the young boy.

DOCTOR
(whispers)
Yes.

The Doctor gets up, walks over to Darian. He holds his hand out as if to
shake Darians.

DOCTOR
Darian McCarson, I presume.

Darian looks at the Doctor. A look of bewilderment crosses his face.

DARIAN
(surprised)
Doctor McDermott?

DOCTOR
(smiles, grabs Darians hand, shakes it wildly)
Thats right, but you can just call me Doctor.
	(points at Brian)
This is Brian.

Brian waves and smiles.

DARIAN
Correct me if Im wrong, but arent you a bit young to be a Doctor? Or a
teacher, for that matter.

The Doctor sits down and gestures for Darian to do the same.

Darian sits next to Brian, still with a confused look on his face.

DOCTOR
No, not really. Age is a relative term, after all. It depends on your point
of view. Some would say you are
(MORE)
DOCTOR (CONTD)
too young to be a genius. In fact, from what Ive heard, just about
everyone is of that opinion.

Darian just looks at the Doctor.

DARIAN
Look, I dont know who you are, and
frankly, Ive heard better stories on Sesame Street that what you told me
over the phone.

DOCTOR
Yes, well, lying isnt exactly my strong suit.

BRIAN
Doctor, dont you think youd better tell him the truth?

The Doctors eyes widen, and he smiles.

DOCTOR
Do you think he can handle the truth?

DARIAN
Sure I can, as long as you dont go impersonating Jack Nicholson.

DOCTOR
I beg your pardon.

DARIAN
Never mind. Look, I believe a lot of things, Doc. Youve got to in this day
and

DOCTOR
Doc! If you dont mind

DARIAN
Sorry. Doctor, then. Now, you were saying?

DOCTOR
I think youd better prepare yourself for a bit of a shock.

DARIAN
Im listening.

LATER

Darian continues to listen, but he feels that hes doing little more than
humouring the Doctor.

DARIAN
And you want me to help you fix your, what was it? Time Phase Calibrator?

DOCTOR
In a nutshell.

DARIAN
Thats a fantastic story, but I dont believe a word of it.

A frustrated look crosses the Doctors face.

Brian sighs and rubs his hand down his face.

DARIAN
You really expect me to believe that youre an alien Time Lord from the
planet Gallifrey who crashed his space/time machine here on Earth, and you
need my help fixing it?

Darian begins to laugh, as the Doctor rapidly grows more agitated, but
never loses his grip on the gravity of the situation.

DOCTOR
Yes.

Darian stops laughing, a smile still crossing his face.

DARIAN
Okay, prove it.

DOCTOR
If I must.

He pulls the Time Phase Calibrator from his pocket and hands it to Darian.

Darian looks at it closely.

DARIAN
Its Japanese, right?

The Doctor takes the Calibrator back from Darian.

BRIAN
I think youre going to have to show him the TARDIS, Doctor.

DOCTOR
If I must.
	(to Darian)
I was hoping to avoid the walk, you know, but you leave me no choice.

DARIAN
No, go on. Show me this time machine of yours. This Id really like to see.

EXT. P&L SUPERSTOP DAY

Korben is standing at the side of the store, looking in through the door,
watching the Doctor talk to Darian.

The Doctor, Darian and Brian rise from their seats and move towards the
front door.

They exit the store and begin to walk towards the highway; towards the
TARDIS.

Korben press a button on a wrist communicator he is wearing.

KORBEN
Mister Bilk, I have found the boy. He is with a strangely clothed man and
another boy.

VOICE
Kill the man and the boy if you must, but do not harm Darian. It is
imperative that he remains alive for the time being.

KORBEN
Yes, Mister Bilk.

Korben releases the button on his watch and begins pursuing the Doctor and
co.

As he walks, we see him pull a small, silver, disc-like object from his
pocket.

CUT TO:

EXT. OLD HOUSE DAY

The TARDIS is still outside the house, where it was earlier.

The Doctor, Brian and then Darian step through the nearby bushes and walk
over to the TARDIS.

DOCTOR
(to Darian)
There she is.

Darian steps around Brian and looks at the TARDIS. He seems confused by its
size and appearance.

DARIAN
	(reads)
Police Box?

DOCTOR
Yes.

DARIAN
Police telephone. Free for use of public. Advice and assistance available
immediately. Officers and cars respond to urgent calls. Pull to open.
	(turns to face Doctor)
Your time machine?

DOCTOR
TARDIS.

DARIAN
TARDIS is free for use of public? Boy, youre giving.

DOCTOR
This is only its disguise, Darian.

DARIAN
Oh, all right then. Well, its not a very good one, is it?

DOCTOR
Its chameleon circuit is playing up. As a matter of fact, it has been for
several hundred years now.

DARIAN
Chameleon circuit? Youve really worked this delusion out to its finer
points, havent you?

As the Doctor opens the doors, we see Korben spring from the bushes.

He grabs Darian, wrapping his hand around the boys mouth to silence him.

The Doctor turns to face the situation, clearly shocked.

Brian jumps back towards the TARDIS, hoping to avoid attack from Korben.

DOCTOR
Who are you?

KORBEN
Korben Redferd. And youre not long for this world.

DOCTOR
Okay, Korben, why dont you let the boy go, hmm?

KORBEN
Your life is of no value to my employer. If you stand in my way, I will
kill you.

DOCTOR
And who is your employer?

Korben doesnt answer. Instead, he jumps through the bushes, taking the
strange plate from his pocket and dropping it to the ground.

The Doctor starts to give chase, but the plate explodes.

The Doctor is thrown back, the blast knocking him to the ground.

Brian, shielding his eyes from the flash, is thrown against the TARDIS. He
recovers, gets to his feet.
Rounding the TARDIS, Brian sees the Doctor lying on the ground.

The Doctors head is bleeding, and he appears to have stopped breathing.

Brians eyes widen. He rushes to the Doctors aide. He kneels next to the
Doctor, checks his pulse.

ANGLE on the Doctors face, lifeless and still, as Brian shuts his eyes.
The implication is clear the Doctor is dead.

Musical STING.
