Go.
"Also called igo. A game for two players in which black and white
stones are alternately placed at the intersections of lines on a board
with the object of capturing the opponent's stones and securing
control over open spaces on the board...It is somewhat hard to
understand why the game did not spread further in early times, for
some have called it the world's most INTELLECTUAL game, and many
aficionados in Japan consider it a true art."

"Go is harder than chess."
Source: caption under two Japanese men playing go, in some dusty
oversized book at the University of Florida library, top floor. To
all those who know it...yes, the scary floor. At least they added
more lighting this year. And there's a computer. No chair. They
don't actually want you to get comfortable, you know.
This is where those two famous fathers' brainpower goes! Whenever
Genma is looking lazy, don't be fooled! He's really planning his
master strategy. (Distracting Soun and cheating outrageously, I
presume ;)
On a similar note, "shogi" is a Japanese form of chess, with, I
understand, slightly different rules.
Having never seen a Ranma episode, I dunno which they play, since
fanfics seem to have it both ways, but from the movie I DID see, I
would assume it was Go. (Big Trouble, Ranma defeated one of the
baddies by standing on the stones of a giant Go board.)

as possible.
