Actually, the hakama is simply the jacket portion of a gi.
The hakama is the pants portion, and the upper part is a kimono. This
was court dress in the days of the samurai (ever see a samurai movie?)
According to the Costume Encyclopedia, anyway.
It seems very funny to me that you can sit there and say that none of
the characters wear a gi, when no fewer than four are seen wearing gi
frequently:
Sorry. I meant that there is no such thing as a 'gi' in refrence to
ranma. There are refrences to 'dogi' or 'douji', but I have seen nothing
in any literal translation that refers to a 'gi'.
I've once seen Akane's outfit reffered to as a judo uniform, which would
make it a 'ju-dogi' if I recall correctly.
If I'm wrong about any of this, please tell me. The Encycloedia is
pretty bare in the area of oriental dress, and there very well may be
refrences to a 'gi' in Ranma that I haven't seen.
