it is the impact from the fall that causes the damage, not the

Interesting. If I recall correctly (which may very well not be correct 
at all!) Herb was able to avoid being damaged by the Hiryuu Shouten Ha 
by controlling his emotions, and, while he was still picked up and 
thrown into the air, he sustained no damage. This is also according to 
the FAQ, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it's wrong, since it's full 
of bizarre stuff.

Also, simply falling would not have damaged Ryouga so badly that he 
looked like he was on the edge of death.
