That depends... Gregg's fic didn't specify (to the best of my 
recollection) exactly *when* the girls were taken.  A child at 
a young enough age could be a 'tabula rasa' -- a blank slate --
perfect for brainwashing... say, sometime before Akane-chan
is five years old.  And the reason that Nabiki and Kasumi know
otherwise is simply because, being just that much older, they
had passed that golden period for proper brainwashing -- 
one more reason the Amazons don't want them.

 Maybe when Akane comes, she could be held hostage while the 
 Saotomes, and the two Tendous try to debug her (like people in 
 the US do to friends and family members who joined cults.)

Actually, it's called de-programming, but that's a minor nit.
And no, I don't know much more about how it's conducted
than anyone else.

That creates and interesting side story in and of itself, one
I'd like to see... anyone ever consider sending even a normal
Ranmaverse Akane-chan through therapy to rid her (at least
to some extent) of her vioent streak?

P.S.  Gregg -- you said the change was due to Happosai
teaching the secret amazon technique of "splitting cat hairs"
to his students so that they could cover his escapes better.
I guess that's why Happi didn't get his from the Amazons,
but where IS the old fart?  And how come Soun couldn't
escape when the Amazons came knocking?  If he got nailed
for teaching these things, some of his students should 
have been able to covr for him in turn.  Just a thought.
