Er, yes it does.  The word for 'angel' is 'tenshi,' or occasionally the
English loanword 'enzeru.'  One doesn't even have to look farther than the
opening words of Eva's theme song -- 'Zankoku na tenshi no you ni' --
'Like a cruel angel.'

Why were the Shito called Angels in English?  Possibly Gainax thought it
would sound cooler than Disciples or Apostles.  Perhaps they wanted to add
a layer of double meaning.  Perhaps it was part of Anno's hideously
complex and subtle master scheme.  I really don't know.
