Seraphim's Judgment:
Part 10:
EVA of Innocence

A crossover between Neon Genesis Evangelion
and Teknoman.
Written by Christian Clark

In one of the meeting rooms, the four Children, the comm officers,
Commander Katsuragi, Akegi, Fuyustuki, and Gendou all sat, discussing
the inevitable attack. Gendou stood up and grabbed the attention of all
in the room.

"First of all. We all know that it's more than likely that SEELE is
going to attack. Most possibly, they'll be able to get UN Forces to
assist them in the assault. What's worse is that they'll have all nine
production type EVAs with them."

Touji spoke in surprise, "You mean there's more of them out there? I
thought the latest one was Unit 04 that vanished in Nevada!"

Gendou shook his head. "When I last checked, there was only nine of
them. What's more is that they are all equipped with S2 organs. Where as
our Units 01 and 02 only have a half of one from the angel they ate. So
they are capable of instant regeneration should a limb be cut off."

This time, Misato had a question, "But who is going to pilot them? I
mean, they couldn't just have nine Children ready just like that."

"They don't need them. Before they sent Kaworu to us, they copied his
brainwave patterns and integrated them into dummy plugs. They've been on
stand-by ever since."

Fuyustuki turned to his friend, "So, they're going to try for a Third
Impact whether we like it or not." In response, Gendou only nodded.

"That's what we have to defend. We need to make sure they do not get
the giant on the cross in Terminal Dogma, and Rei. With both, the EVAs
can create an impact, and with Kaworu's brainwaves there's no doubt of
what will happen."

After a little deliberation, Makoto spoke, "Why don't we just destroy
that thing in Dogma? They can't make an impact without it, right?"

"We have neither the time or resources to do so. Besides, if it can
survive an explosion that created the Second Impact, then there's not
much chance of us succeeding. The only thing we can do is fight."

An uneasy silence suddenly fell upon the room. Fighting against the
government would turn the world against them.

Taking off her glasses, Ristuko said, "Then it looks like we have to
destroy those EVAs completely. Otherwise we're all goners."

Gendou turned to her, "That is correct."

Once more, Misato spoke, "So, if there is a battle, we need to evacuate
the civilian populace. Because with thirteen EVAs jumping around the
city, I doubt there'll be much left of it."

Maia's eyes widened and then she said, "Wait... even with the EVAs, the
UN ground troops might take command of the Geofront and cut off the
power to the EVAs."

Misato turned to her, "I know. That's why we got to get rid of the EVAs
as soon as possible and try to evacuate NERV as fast as we can."

Gendou took the floor again. "Then it's settled. Tomorrow morning, we
evacuate the civilian populace and arm every available staff member to
hold off the UN troops. We got plans to make, let's go."

The meeting disbanded and every group went their separate ways.

In the elevator, Touji leaned against the wall of it, arms akimbo, deep
in thought.

Asuka continued to stare at him, not even knowing why she was doing it.
After hearing what was to come, she began to get this uneasy feeling in
her stomach. And it was happening every time she looked at Touji. Then
something came to mind.

	"Hey... Touji."

He looked back to her, "Yeah?"

	"Are you worried about tomorrow?"

	"Of course. Who wouldn't be?"

She paused for a minute before continuing. This time her tone became
harsher. "Ok Suzuhara, I want to get one thing straight."

He frowned and looked back to her. "What?"

She stomped over to him, grabbed his collar, yanked his face near to
hers, and growled, "You'd better come out of that battle in one piece.
Both mind and body or else I'll NEVER forgive you! Am I making myself
clear?"

He sneered back, "Of course I'm gonna come back! But you tell me one
thing."

	"What?"

"Why are you doing this? I mean, if you don't even care a thing about
me why go to all this..." that was when the wheels turned and something
went click.

Asuka let go of his shirt, stepped back a bit, and softened her
demeanor. He looked at her straight in the eye as he asked, "Do... do
you really..."

Leaning against the wall adjacent to the one he was leaning on, she
nodded, then responded. "I don't know if it's because you've been there
for me or you've just tolerated me for being a jerk, or something else
but..." she turned to him, "I just don't want you to get killed out
there."

He was silent. Seeing her like this reminded him of helping her she had
been mind-raped. He could not tell if it was just some guy thing or if
actual feelings were developing for her. Not for the girl that had given
him a hard time, but for this young woman who was opening herself up, to
him of all people.

He shuffled his feet, looked down, and replied, "Well... it's..." he
racked his brain repeatedly for the right words. He turned around and
pressed his hands against the wall. He wanted to say the right thing
before his usual impulsive behavior would mess things up, but it was
very difficult.

He looked to the left to see her looking up at him. She started to
smile and whispered, "Do... do you..." He looked back at her, hesitated,
and he nodded his head before she finished the question. Almost as if he
knew what she was going to ask.

He leaned against the wall with one arm and looked back to her, "Yes. I
mean, sure, when I first met you practically slapped my face off. But
seeing you like this, when you're gentle, calm, and open. That's the
Asuka Soryu-Langley I like... a lot."

She smiled and leaned against the wall beside him, "And when I first
met you, I took you for some typical boy. But, when you..." she started
to giggle, "...when you play the knight in shining armor for me. That's
the Touji Suzuhara that I like."

His face turned a little red of embarrassment and he looked down. Then,
he felt an arm wrap around his waist and Asuka leaning into him. At
first, he had no clue what to make of it. Then, he slowly put his right
arm around her and gently clasped her shoulder. He could feel her giving
his waist a small affectionate squeeze of approval and leaned against
his shoulder like a pillow.

He heard her whisper, "You're cute when you blush you know."

*************************************************

Within the holding areas of the EVAs, one of the four souls suddenly
sparked to life.

<Asuka... I can sense her! > Ninohi said to herself.

<Hm? > Sanshi asked, waking up.

<Sanshi... I can feel her mind again! We can synchronize again! > She
said with evident joy.

<That's wonderful! Are you feeling better too? I mean, it was bad
enough that I was fighting you when Kaworu used you the day before. >

<Thank you... Oh, if I were you, I'd take a peek into Touji's mind.
You'd be surprised. >

Not exactly knowing what she meant, Sanshi connected with his pilot
briefly and saw the scene of the Second and the Fouth Child admitting
their feelings for each other. He found himself speechless.

<Now I know you two are alike! [snicker] >

<Well, at least they aren't fighting anymore... >

	<...And? >

	<And... what? >

<Doesn't that make you feel better? >

Sanshi paused, not really that experienced with matters of the heart.
But he could tell that this was something that was not of the usual for
him.

	<Actually, yes it does. >

<Now I can show those jerks what Asuka and I are made of. > She
announced with a fiery fist clenched. Sanshi sweated nervously at her
newfound confidence.

Gendou was walking down to one of the deeper areas of the Dogma, he had
a single mission right now. It was another mistake he was going to
remedy. He heard a pair of footsteps behind him, pulled out a derringer,
and aimed it at the intruder. Which only turned out to be Misato.
Without faltering, he put the gun back in his pocket and resumed to the
deeper areas of the complex.

"Don't say sorry or anything." Misato grumbled and ran behind him. At
another heavily armored door, he took out his card key and ran it
through the slider.

"It doesn't really matter what you'll see here Katsuragi. It may not be
here tomorrow." He said simply as the door opened. Within, a single tube
was hung underneath a large array of gray tubes. From Misato's point of
view, she could barely make out a human-like figure in the liquid. In
fact, it was a human. As she got closer, she could see that it was a
girl that looked exactly like Rei.

"What's the deal here Ikari?" Misato said with evident displeasure.

From a console several feet in front of the tube, he punched in a
sequence of commands. Underneath the console, he took out what appeared
to be a set of clothing. As he walked to the tube, the liquid drained
from the tube and it lifted up from around the conscious girl within.

"Reina, wake up." He said to the girl within the tube.

"Ikari-san! What are..." the girl that looked like Rei asked as Gendou
handed her what looked like a pair of hospital pants and shirt. He
turned around to speak to Misato as the other Rei began to dress.

"At first, it was just a contingency or a backup for the Third Impact.
Now, I need to make sure it doesn't happen."

Misato was not sure whether to believe him or not. But recent events
had shown that he was beginning to be trustworthy. She smirked and said,
"And here I thought you were some lying, self-centered prick. Guess I
was wrong."

He appeared to not take any offense from her as he turned to see the
second Rei standing in the hospital clothes. "Let's go." He said to her.
She nodded and followed him out of the chamber. Misato walked up beside
Gendou and got a single look at his face.

He seemed more focused, surer about what he was doing. More so than
when he had the glasses. That still did not mean she liked him, but he
was worthy of her respect. She took a brief glance at the second Rei
behind them and then back to Gendou and asked, "What are you going to
do?"

After a minute of deliberation, he turned to her and said, "To take her
anywhere but here."

"I see." With that, she walked ahead and back to Central Dogma where
the other officers would be waiting for her.

*************************************************

Within the apartment of Seraphina Brown, she and Nodoka Saotome had
overheard some of the defense plans they got from a few members of NERV
personnel.

"So, if it is true, we have no choice but to change. Whether the
Seraphim comes or not." Nodoka said to her companion.

"But how can we do that without giving ourselves away?" Sera asked as
she handed Nodoka a cup of warm tea.

"You can use a sniper position from one of the buildings to keep out of
sight. Don't worry about me. I can take care of myself. But if worse
comes to worse, get out by any means possible."

	"Understood."

Nodoka took a minute to stare at the stars outside. Sera joined her as
they contemplated what might be their final night alive.

*************************************************

On the outside of the city, a single figure sat on the grass and stared
at the sky. Shinji did not know what to do about anything. He remembered
the eleventh angel when Misato had asked them all if they wanted to
write down wills. The only difference here was that he had a much
stronger feeling of doom than before.

True, he had made up with Rei about Kaworu, but some things just would
not let him go and he continued to avoid her. Although he still
remembered Kooriichi asking him to help Rei, it was now something he
could not do. He put his face to his knees and shook his head. It was
the same thing all over again. He was running away and there was nothing
he would do about it.

He turned at the sound of another pair of footsteps and saw Rei walking
up to him, looking almost the exact way she did when he first saw her.
Emotionless.

In response, he turned his back to her.

"Somehow, I am not surprised." Rei whispered and sat a few feet from
him. "Shinji-kun. Concerning what is to happen... will you listen to me
momentarily?"

Shinji wanted to run to anywhere but there, but he nodded nonetheless.

"For all that I can remember, I had no ambitions whatsoever, other
than doing what I was ordered to. Although you did not fare that much
better than I did, I found myself envious of your position. You have
much more than I will ever know. And many times I wished I were in your
place."

Shinji turned to her in surprise. She continued regardless. "Before I
came to know you, I always wondered why everyone acted the way they did.
How I was different from them in almost every respect. It is sad to say
that I know why now. Even to be as pained in your heart as you were and
are, I would give everything to know what it is like. To understand how
the human heart works and goes.

"Though now, things are much different than they were when I first
recall. Meeting you brought so many things that I cannot understand at
all. I now have that desire to know what it all means. Even Commander
Ikari knows the changes that I have gone through. I have asked him about
it on many occasions and he has not answered me, he tells me to find the
answers for myself... but I am not sure how to do that.

"To put it simply Shinji-kun," she looked directly into his eyes,
crawled forward, and took his hand in both hers. "Please... help me. I
want to understand what it all means, and somehow, I believe that you
are the one who can help me."

Shinji looked down at his hands in Rei's, then he looked back up to her
to see how her eyes were truly pleading for his help. Stammering he
replied, "But... how can I help? I mean, if I can't even help myself,
how can I hope to help anyone else?" Not being able to handle it, he
turned away.

She let go of his hands and looked down, "I have no answer for that.
All I can say is that maybe you do know, but you do not at the moment."
Shinji looked back to her. "Can you promise me something?" He turned his
head to her direction slightly as she continued.. "Promise me that you
will return from tomorrow. I do not care if I do not, but please tell me
you will."

Shinji was now beyond shock at her last statement. After all that has
happened, she is ready to throw it all away? {It's because how bad
you're treating her you dork! She had something with you and now with
the way you are now, she's got nothing left anymore. She doesn't care if
she lives now, just like when you first came. Hope you're happy.} A
faint voice said from the back of his head.

Were it not for the small internal argument, he would have seen Rei
step up from the grass and begin to leave. He did not know what to do,
but the thought of just leaving her like this was driving him crazy.
Therefore, without thinking, he said, "Rei!"

She stopped and turned to him as he said, "I... I promise and... I'm
sorry. For everything I said." Hearing those words made a small smile
appear on her face, she mouthed the word 'arigatou' back to him as she
continued back to her home. Seeing her smile, the same way she did when
he opened her entry plug at the incident with the fifth angel, it made
him feel a bit better to know that things were being set right.

Turning back to lay on the ground, he murmured, "You're such an idiot."
He said to himself as he stared into the sky. Yet, that self-resentment
soon vanished as he recalled her saying thank you and the thought that
he was capable of giving something good to another. But he still felt
like an idiot nonetheless.

End of Chapter 10

[Warhammer comes out again.]

WH: {Revision notes} I still wanted to keep the possible Touji/Asuka
couple in this because I intend to continue their story in another fic I
will write once I get back.

The only other things I have to say is that with Rei's 'evolution', so
many new things are coming to her. Therefore, seeing Gendou in Shinji
somewhat, I think she has developed a small dependency on the younger
Ikari. I am not really sure if this a good thing or not. The good part
being that she can learn what it is like to live like others, the bad
thing is that it might digress into something so pitiful Rei would be
better off alone. I certainly hope I am not doing anything wrong.

{Original notes}Well, I guess I would call this one the 'shojo' chapter
of the fic, but I'm not totally sure about that. Actually, it's more
like the calm before the storm. But anyway, expect TONS of fighting next
chapter.

First of all, there's Gendou. Most people despise him others merely
loath him. I just hope that this is a way to at least turn away a little
of that hatred at him. But he can still be a jerk, which he is in the
anime. I've made Gendou a hero in this fic, and I'm proud of it dag
nabit!

At first I was hoping to put this into ten chapters, but looks like
it's gotten to 11. So, the more the merrier, that's what I say.

Next, the relationships I created. I certainly hoped that I paced their
affections right. I need to know if I did them right. I'd never forgive
myself if I did it wrong.

I decided to rename the third Rei clone, Reina. It still holds true to
the original and it's different. So it works out... I think. Also,
expect her to play a rather significant role in the next chapter.

Finally; this may be the first time that actual Teknomen will engage I
battle in this fic. I was hoping for a scene like this to come about and
here it is! Woo!

Now, tomorrow will decide the fate of the human race. Should anyone of
the enemy EVAs or UN forces get through and capture both Rei and
Lillith, mankind is doomed. Can our heroes stop them despite the odds?
Find out in the final chapter of Seraphim's Judgment.
