A very common error, originating from a mistake in recounting Clarke's 
assertation.  The actual relationship is as follows:

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is *indistinguishable* from magic," 
meaning that--from a normal, human perspective, the difference between the 
two is infinitely obscured.  An analogous relationship: "acceleration [insert 
appropiate qualifiers here] is indistinguishable from gravity," yet 
acceleration is merely a vector quantity component of force--not a force 
itself (as gravity is).
