As a newbie to the FFML, that raises a question in my mind. What is the
accepted procedure for C&C? Is it assumed that C&C should be sent
privately, or should it be posted to the mailing list for all to see?
Oy. This is going to lead to a lot of spam...but in this case I don't
think it can be helped.
Most
of the responses for my own story have been sent to my email, rather than
posted, and I've mainly done the same, but speaking for myself, I wouldn't
mind at all if it was all open posting. I think that if everyone was able
to see the comments made by other people, there would be less duplication
of critique, which has happened a lot.
I think duplication of critique can be valuable. If one person
writes in and says something you did, didn't work, that could be
just an individual preference thing. If multiple people write
in with the same beef, that tells you the problem may be with your
story rather than the reader. Also, the more responses you get,
even duplicates, the more you are assured that someone is reading
you.
Personally, I only send send a comment out openly if it is
1. A Boggs, Mizu, and Cogito Ergo Sum piece.
2. Contains comments that I think apply to more than just
this author.
or
3. I hit reply to all accidentally.
In that same direction, how about MST's? Are they supposed to be
generally posted, or sent to the author first?
Bah. Sending it to the author first is definitely more polite. But
I'm not going to go to the effort of creating one of my finely crafted
in character C&Cs, and then not post it. I put work into those things
(usually).
