Interesting that you should bring that up... A friend of mine and I
were discussing the same subject when I noted something else. If you
look at shojo anime, like Marmalade Boy and Fuushigi Yuugi, the lead
female roles are rather mundane, normal, everyday people, with Miaka
pushing a bit towards the Bitch side, yet everybody falls in love with
them... I think the creators intend for that to add to the appeal of
the anime/manga. 'Look, if this normal, everyday, grungy guy/bitchy
girl can get this ultrahot, supersexy, babe for their girl/boyfriend,
then there is hope for you yet!' is the message....
(Granted in Marmalade Boy, this is a bit different. Everybody loves
somebody besides the one that they are with. Yuu and Miki are the
notable exception. It's the only anime that I needed to write down the
different romantic relationships as multivariable quadratic equations in
order to make any sense of the damn thing... Triangles? Polyhedrons is
more like it.....)
