If you're sticking with Evangelion characters . . . could I suggest
picking somebody "random" from SEELE or NERV security divisions? Create a
new character if there isn't somebody suitable in Eva . . . 

And if you're looking at other series too . . . hmmmmm. BGC has a few good
ones (Quincy, Mason, and Largo were already suggested), I can think of a
couple of possibilities from Slayers (Rezo and Xelloss come to mind, but
primarily Rezo), possibly Kagato (from Tenchi Muyou!).
