I would phrase that in a different way... in terms of the -things- that
Akane sensed. For instance: "Akane could almost read his mind. He had
hated Saotome, but Shampoo had loved him, and he was able to see that
now..." etc. :)

Well, this is sort of a variant look at Ranma 1/2.  I don't think it
really follows the manga/anime (I think Ryouga loves Akane, and Akane
loves Ranma...but that's not the point).
