I must interject with a shameless plug on this note.

I'd like to refer everyone (for the purpose of illustrating the point), to
my work in progress "How To Be A Ranma 1/2 Character."

It's got a wonderful section on character mentality (specifically two
subsections on "Idiot" and "Stupid").  I think it makes the point Stephen
here is trying to express.
