People can mistake common fanfic ideas for the source material, 
particularly when they don't have access to it, as is the case
with most Sailor Moon material and most North Americans.  
However, it's far from unreasonable for there to be a Serenity
cult.  ...
But I doubt that Serenity deliberately tried to become worshipped,
