collects Ranma religously yet thinks Ranma is a jerk  and Akane is to good
for any of the male characters of the series.  

Ranma *is* a jerk.  Ranma is also cool.  Akane *is* too good for them.
She's also perfect for any of them.

     So why is Ranma the most written fanfic series on the web?  What causes
the passion both good and bad about this series?  

Because most of us see dimly, and can't appreciate both sides of the
characters.  No insult intended.
