Draft Part 2b
Usagi's eyes flickered open. Her head pounded as if there were a
party going on, and she wasn't invited. This only made it worse. Her
current view gave away little. She could make out the night sky, the
stars twinkling down at her innocently. She bent her head up a bit to
see more. A sharp pain shot through her neck. What had gotten her this
time?
Ami leaned over Usagi, her visor reading all of their leader's
vital signs. A spike in brain waves had alerted her to Usagi's pending
consciousness. She smiled as her patient's eyes flittered open.
Usagi saw Ami's head pop into view right before she attempted the
lifting of the head. She leaned back as Ami laid a hand on her forhead.
"Stay down, Sailor Moon, you've had quite a shock to your system."
Ami whispered.
Shinji stood to her left, staring up at his other self. "I wonder
where they got the power to do that?" He mused, to no one in
particular.
Asuka, just as bemused, shrugged her shoulders. "We don't really
know much about how they work, so, who knows?"
Makoto looked the people they had rescued up and down a few times.
"Um, aren't you dressed awefully odd?" Then, she looked up at the Eva
units. "And what are those? You seem to know about them."
Asuka looked at Makoto as if just noticing her and Shinji weren't
alone. "Uh, yea, thanks for wasting that creature. I'm Asuka Langley,
and this is Shinji Ikari. We, um, we're test pilots for the
government." Please buy it, she thought fiercly.
"Aren't you a little young to be test pilots?" Questioned Rei.
Damn. "Uh, yea. Well, we were selected from our class specially
to do this. It seems that these things can only be piloted by people of
a certain age." Certainly not a lie.
"How unusual." Commented Ami, looking up at the giant machines
through her visor. "That is an amazing conglomeration of biological and
mechanical components. Almost seems alive." She whispered the last
part, mostly to herself.
However, in the quite of the moment, all heard her statement.
Especially the pilots. Shinji, in particular, seemed to shudder at the
thought. There's more truth to that than she knows, he thought.
"Hey, Shinji!" Asuka yelled as he seemed lost in himself.
He snapped awake. "Yea?"
"Maybe we should get in our tubes and see what happened?"
"Hmm. I suppose so. I can't think of anything better to do. But,
how are we going to get up there?" He looked up to the head of his Eva.
Sailor Moon had gotten up entirely, but was instantly entranced by
the Eva's again. "What... what in the world are those things?" She
squeaked.
Shinji turned to her. "They're classified military assault
vehicles." He explained, playing along with Asuka's story. Not that he
was actually lying.
"Classified?" She wondered out loud. "How do you keep those
things hidden?"
Shinji chose not to answer that one. Probably wouldn't believe him
anyway.
"Keep them underground?" She guessed. Shinji choked. Then
again...
"Okay, we're still down here!" Asuka exasperated, interrupting
Usagi and Shinji's talk.
"Perhaps I could render some assistance." A mellow voice carrying
these words wafted in from all around.
Sailor Moon instantly reacted to the voice. "Tuxedo Kamen!" She
squealed giddily.
"What Kamen?" Shinji asked, looking around for the source of the
voice. He found it in a most peculiar location, the right hand of his
Eva.
Asuka noticed too. "Hey, how did you get up there?!" She yelled
at the new figure.
Tuxedo Kamen leapt from his perch. His cape flowed in the wind as
he descended toward the group below. He landed softly on the pavement,
making nary a sound. "Quite simply, fair one." He answered to the
awestuck Asuka.
"Do you suppose you could get me up there?" She asked, still in a
daze as she pointed to the head of 02.
He looked at her a moment, then contimplated the Eva. With a nod
of his head he lifted Asuka from the ground and jumped up to the hand of
her Eva. Asuka let out a whoosh of air as she felt the universe settle
around her once more. This was a short reprieve, though, for a moment
later, Tuxedo Kamen finished the trip.
Sailor Moon and Shinji stared after the two departed associates.
Both had an odd feeling as they watched, a feeling they didn't like.
Sailor Moon turned to Shinji. "How are you getting up there?" She
asked.
"You wouldn't happen to be able to carry me, would you?" He
returned with a grin.
She giggled. "Well, I could try, but I'm not sure."
"Yea, right. She couldn't lift your spirits." Rei shot at the
obviously flustered Sailor Moon.
She instantly turned red. "That's not true Rei! Here, I'll prove
it!"
With that, she lifted Shinji from the ground and made for the hand
of Unit 01. She made it, barely. She set down Shinji, amazed she
actually made it. She looked over the edge of an enormous finger at
Rei. "See!" She screamed at the top of her lungs.
Rei's voice emenated from her pocket (?). "Why are you yelling,
moron?" She calmly mused.
Sailor Moon seemed to turn yet another shade of red, causing Shinji
to back off a step. She took the comunicator from her pocket (?) and
flung it at Rei as best she could. Then, she gasped. "Oh, I hope it
doesn't break." She pleaded quietly. She turned back to Shinji.
"Well, I hope you can make it the rest of the way up. I don't think I
can do that again so soon."
Shinji looked up at the head with some doubt etched on his face.
However, something happened at that moment. The hand suddenly began to
raise itself. This caused Sailor Moon to cry out indignantly. Shinji
simply stared, dumbfounded, as he was lifted to the back of the neck of
the Eva. When they arrived, the sheilding over the entry plug opened.
The tube silently spun from it's housing, the entry door ending up right
in front of him. He stared, still shocked, at the door for a moment.
Then, training took over and he reached for the handles. Twisting them
sharply, he broke the pressure seals on the door. The portal was opened
with the hiss of depressurization. He stared into the dimly lit plug.
Some emergency lights the source of the dull illumination.
Sailor Moon was looking over his shoulder. "Pretty neat. Do you
sit there?"
Shinji almost fell off the hand. He had forgotten entirely about
her! He really had to work on his loosing touch with reality whenever
something odd happened. "Uh, yea." He answered. With that, he stepped
into the tube, and situated himself in the ergonomically designed chair.
Instantly he felt himself link up with the Eva. His brain waves were
now one with the Eva's. He felt the familiar feeling of power flow
through him. The world fuzzed as his sight became that of his
machine's. He saw, peripherally, Sailor Moon, still perched on the
hand, staring at his body. A revelation traveresed his mind as he
stared at her. He was linked with, and using the Eva! It should have
lost all power hours ago! What in the heck was going on?!
He turned to look at Sailor Moon with his real eyes. The Eva's
head obediantly turned as well. "Something strange is going on here."
He said to her.
She looked back and forth between the boy and the creature he was
in, noting the syncronization of their movements. "Yea, no kidding."
