	Much useful information is contained in the book: "Culture Shock! 
A Guide to Customs and Ediquette, Japan" by Rex Shelley.  Times Edition 
Pte Ltd, revised ed 1995, reprint 1996.  My bookstore special ordered for 
me.  According to this source, the gift must be money.  The norms are 
20,000 yen if you are going alone and 30,000 yen if you are going as a 
couple.  If it is a shared present, 35,000 yen would be in order.  It has 
to be put into a standard wedding gift envelope which is available at 
depato.  But take great care: the same counter sells funeral gift envelopes.
