If you want to write an adventure game in the Infocom style, I would recommend
a language called Inform. You can get it from ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive, as
well as other games for Inform.
Also, there's a good newsgroup on Usenet that discusses matters relating
to desigining and programming Interactive Fiction - rec.arts.int-fiction.
You'll be able to find discussions of both what makes a good Interactive
Fiction game in general and specific tips for programming (usually in
either Inform or TADS, the two major text-adventure design langagues out
there). Hope it's of use.
