I have a question, I noticed you didn't mention Oh My 
Goddess, why? This shoould fit you requirements interesting 
characters, a loose ending and the characters can be fit 
into many types of situations. Of course the fact that I 
really like the comic (american {english language} version 
of the manga) doesn't hurt any either.
