In fact, it was established early on in the series that Ataru would marry
SHINOBU.
It was a story where Lum accidentally projected the two of them twelve years
into the future, and they met Ataru's future child. It's story #11 in Viz's
Urusei Yatsura "Perfect Collection", titled "We Are the Children".
Well, you've heard the story about how Takahashi originally planned to
put Ataru and Shinobu together, then partway through the series changed
her mind and paired him with Lum instead? The story you mention is from
the first period.
In fact, the Inaba the Dreammaker OAV revisits this story among other
possible futures... good story. *Good* story.
