I know I said I was done speaking about this but I had to make this point.
I, personally, think that you all can write whatever you like.
I ask for discretion on the part of the author. Some people are going on
about it as if I were asking for totalitarianism. I'm not asking for
control. I'm asking for good taste. Whose standards? Society's.
(Don't give me that "How do we know what society's tastes are" line. Some
of you know well that what you have written is far outside the boundaries
of good taste.)
RL>I have to disagree with that last line. One person's good taste is
Would you disagree with that last line when the authors themselves said
it was sick and disgusting?
It's not nice to wade through some dude's perviest take
on the series then get told "Well, you shouldn't have read it." I just
want a bit of judgement.
RL><shrug> It's the same thing. If my judgement disagrees with yours,
RL>what are we to do? If given the choice between asking people not to
RL>write certain kinds of stories, and having people choose to read a story
RL>and become offended, I will always choose the latter.
RL>You choose to read a story - no one is forcing it on you. Therefore,
RL>the responsibility to distinguish stories in "good" taste and stories in
RL>"bad" taste is yours, the reader's. *Not* the author's.
How does this prevent any author from using common sense and giving a
warning? You'll notice that he said "wade through some dude's perviest take
on the series then get told 'Well, you shouldn't have read it.' " If something
is going to be pointless out-sickening, then put a warning *BEFORE* the story
is finished. Epecially since most of those type of stories drop the situation
on you in 1 or 2 paragraphs at most. That doesn't leave you any room to say
"Oh, I see where this is going and I don't want to read it." By the time you
realize what's happening, you've already read something that offended you.
everyone's arguing over these damn things, when they shouldn't even be
considered as Ranma. if you want to write stupid preverted stuff, then
make up your own damn characters, and leave the ranma ones alone. If your
one of those preverts who likes to get off by reading these, then go buy
something form softcel/advision.
JH>Define "perverted".
JH>You can't. Your definition may not be the same as my definition of
perverted.
JH>You have no right to impose your morals on me, as I have no right to impose
JH>my morals on you.
JH>In other words, if you don't like it, don't read it.
RL>Do you see? You may consider that fanfic in bad taste. I don't. So
RL>the question remains open: whose standards should we try to live up
RL>to? Not yours. Not mine. It is up to each person to write what they
RL>want. There is no way to establish an objective set of standards about
RL>taste, so don't even try. Live and let live.
Would you support a picture of a 10-year old girl eating the shit of a
man deficating on her face while a 12-year old boy pissed all over her?
What if it
was obviously not taken of a willing girl?
Jeanne and Richard, is that good taste?
Now, obviously if such a picture was taken and released, the photographer
thought it had some sort of artistic merit. Would you support it on those
grounds? (The picture described above is, I hope, fictional)
Now, mind you I'm not saying that gay fanfiction is always like that.
RL>Again, it comes down to the same issue. I don't ever want to try to
RL>discourage anyone from writing whatever they want. The old phrase comes
RL>to mind: "I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the
RL>death your right to say it." I firmly believe that. Let people write
RL>what they want to. They will anyway. Accept it, and relax. :)
I do agree, but that doesn't mean I can't suggest and ask that authors
try their hand at stories done for entertainment, not to see how sick and
demented they can get. Nor, does it stop me from asking for a warning.
Likewise, I fully support fics like "Surrogate" which make you think
about important issues. I don't think "Surrogate" should be distributed
without a warning though. It *IS* a dark fic and has segments certain
people might be offended by. I didn't like reading "Surrogate" but it was
good. But, it's not the story you show to someone looking for typical
campy Ranma commedy.
Hell, I am writing Dragon Path. I don't condone that sort of world, but
I won't let someone tell me not to write it. I did put a warning out there,
and I will repost that warning with other chapters on a semi-regular basis
(especially chapter 6, as pre-readers can probably attest to).
