It actually comes pretty easy for me. I don't know why. And I
can't explain why I like the style so much, either. I didn't go crazy
over the Amber novels (which are done in first person), and I'm not really
fond of most "hard-boiled" detective stories.
The hardest part is generally avoiding the temptation to use a lot
of flashbacks to explain "what has gone before". A flashback is really a
terribly artificial thing, since most people just don't remember the past
as a sudden rush of memories at convenient times. Short stabs of memory
(snippets of conversation, images) are much more common, at least in my
experience.
