Here's a wacky idea...
Why not have Ranma get cursed _after_ he leaves to make his fortune?  The
dread pirate Roberta returns from an overseas trip to China, where Ranma had
fallen into a spring trying to bury some treasure..

        Hmph. <cocks head in thought> Naw... Florin isn't anywhere near
China. 'Sides I wanted to throw everyone in they way they are in the comics
(the latest US ones...) so they could figure out what was going on (sort of)
during the story...
