I almost wish you'd left it at that. That would have been a powerful
story; as you said, just because they profess love for each other
doesn't mean it's a happy ending. Ranma doesn't have to die, but his
absence without any communication is just the same, and the agony of not
knowing is worse than the agony of mourning.
Once Ranma and Akane have their relationship straightened out, if
Ranma wants to search for a cure, wouldn't it be possible, and in character,
that Akane might ask to come with him?
Ranma has no idea how long he will be gone or how dangerous the journey
will be. He leaves her behind because he loves her too much to risk her.
