I remember reading a Warren Ellis story where the X-Men were
incarcerated in a "prison camp" type scenario.  Nightcrawler
was shown biting his tail, Quicksilver's arms and legs were cut off
and Cyclops was blinded.

I felt physically sick after reading it, and then felt like cursing
the author and artist for doing it.

I never stopped to think that they weren't real people.
